This is why you build with masonry.

Seventy miles past the end of Key West, where the Gulf meets the open Atlantic, a giant brick fortress rises straight out of the sea on an island barely big enough to hold it. 🧱 Fort Jefferson is one of the largest masonry structures in the Americas, built from more than sixteen million bricks on a remote speck of sand in the Dry Tortugas.

It was meant to guard the shipping lanes of the Gulf, but the fort became far more famous as a prison. After the assassination of President Lincoln, Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician who set the broken leg of the killer John Wilkes Booth, was convicted as a conspirator and shipped to this lonely rock to serve his sentence. Surrounded by shark filled water and endless horizon, escape was almost unthinkable. Yet when a yellow fever epidemic swept the fort and killed its doctor, Mudd stepped up to treat the sick and dying, and his work eventually earned him a pardon. ⚓

Today the fort still stands in astonishing isolation, its red brick arches framing some of the clearest turquoise water on earth, reachable only by boat or seaplane. It is a place where American history and raw natural beauty collide in the middle of nowhere. 🌊
