Worked a little bit later than normal tonight to try and get some base trim wrapped up. I walked outside on the lower covered patio and you really don't notice how large of space this is until you walk out at night with all the lights on. This space will make the perfect entertaining extension from the lower kitchen area through the 16' patio doors. Rain or shine with our upper deck gutter system and large retaining walls blocking the wind you could use this space throughout the year with the built in natural gas line for any fire pit!

Why do I really like the steady set windows from Pella Windows and Doors? Trim out is made really easy. Since the steady set windows are designed with clips placed around the window jamb they provide built in shimming on all 4 sides when it comes to jamb extension install. Since we install our jamb extensions and window casing in one step (pre build our jambs with casing installed prior to setting) the clips provide the necessary backing on all sides. This eliminates having to add shimming prior to jamb extensions to keep the jambs from tipping in or out in the opening. This creates a perfect 90° return to the windows. Measuring is also easy as we can just measure from clip to clip for accurate measurements and even reveals.

This same process can be done with drywall returns and self taping drywall screws. Since the clips are rigid enough drywall can be fastened directly to the clips for a solid, clean, modern looking return.

We don't just use products because they are new, trendy, or all the rage. We use products that help with installation, timing, and overall quality of the end result. These steady set windows from Pella allow for an easier and safer window install, a more solid install, and an easier trim install stage.

As we laid our way into the shelter room and got around the corner I noticed we had a floor drain for the dehumidifier that I requested to be roughed in. The guys set it like all floor drains should be set lower than normal floor grade. Well I didn't think prior how are we going to get the flooring to look good around this drain. Sashco Inc. Lexel and some full 5 gal buckets of infloor head transfer fluid to the rescue. As we laid our COREtec Floors flooring up to the drain area we laid some healthy beads of Lexel all around the flat portion of the drain area and then really laid some beads on the sloped areas. We made sure the locking tabs of the flooring had a decent bead under each one as well to help assist in keeping the flooring set in place. We floored over the entire area then placed the buckets down over the center of the drain and all around the drain to pull the flooring down tight. We let that set for +24 hrs then cut out the floor drain cover hole. We placed a bucket back over the now cut out hole for another +24 hrs to really help the lexel "set". Since Lexel is naturally stretchy we had to give it some help during the curing process with the buckets. After a week of no weight on it the flooring is still laying down with the slope and the locking tabs are all still engaged. Even the storage room deserves the same finish as the rest of the house.

When the customer said they wanted registers that matched the Coretec lvp and lvt I knew Fittes was the best choice. We have been using fittes products for a while now and they add the perfect amount of elegance without going overboard. We will use these in the master bathroom area with the actual tile flooring as well.

For those wondering my HVAC guy did check on these and the cfms of the HVAC system is not compromised. There is a possibility of static pressure increasing but we have not noticed a difference in the HVAC system sounds.

Quick dirt load out this morning for the CE boys at the next build. Looking at 4" of rain this week and they moved a lot of dirt Friday and Saturday to prep for retaining walls. 2 dump trucks and 2 side dumps running back and forth should make quick work of it. There's a lot of moving parts to a project to keep things moving as best as you can.

Had some interest in how we finished the front door at the current build. It's a pretty straightforward process if you have the right materials ready to go. This same process shown in the video can be done on fiberglass or steel entry doors. I do recommend laying down a base coat of tan paint/primer first as it helps blend the door panel color in better.

Our concrete guys have been getting it done between rain falls the last few weeks. We have a driveway, patios, and sidewalks all poured. Everything is stripped and ready for some dirt work to start soon in preparation for landscaping. We are down to stone, tile work, hand rail, trim, and countertops inside. A good week of laying flooring is one of the most satisfying things you can achieve during a work week. You go from subfloor and drywall to nearly a finished house. Your client gets to see their color choices all finally start meshing together. A couple days of flooring left next week and on to trim work.

The older I get the more I realize every person, every event, almost every detail of our life is all intertwined and there for a reason. The good, the bad, and the okay.

While getting my hair cut today a gentleman came in for his hair cut and it ended up being the 2nd customer I ever had way back in 2016 when I hadn't quite left my job and went off on my own. We were hired to build a huge wrap around deck and one other unusual request; a self supporting tree house. I'll admit it wasn't a tough request but for one of your first few jobs it was a little off the beaten path.
And before anyone comes and says that'll never last, the tree needs room to grow, those supports won't stay, and whatever other words of encouragement the peanut gallery has. The tree house is still standing, has not been modified as far as I can tell, and doesn't appear to be falling over. It's been through 3 different property owners since it was built And still looks as good as it did in 2016.

So what does this have to do with my first statement? I know we live in small North Iowa where everyone knows everything and nothing goes unnoticed. So the likelihood of running into a former client isn't unusual. But I have honestly not run into this one customer for quite some time. We chatted about the current build and how it's crazy to think what started as a deck build and a simple tree house has turned into building custom homes for people in North Iowa. I still look back on the evening I met with him to discuss following your dreams and goals. About taking the leap to leave my comfortable job and do something that terrified me. Part of my payment for that job that I received that night was a bottle of Jameson. A bottle I kept and is still sitting on my shop cabinets as a reminder. A reminder that no matter what happens in life. No matter where you start. Your dreams aren't unattainable. That sometimes it just takes a little push to get you going. And sometimes a little liquid courage in the form of Irish wh***ey never hurts either 😆.

From primed fiberglass to faux wood grained. We knew we wanted to match the cabinets with our front door but unfortunately none of the colors came quite close enough. So we had Pella Eastern Iowa order the door raw on the inside and we would field stain it.

That being said the next problem we had was finding a gel stain that matched. We could not find any stains that came close. We reached out to our local PPG store to see if they could get some but they could not. We did find old masters had some data for being able to custom color gel stain. We reached out to the rep and they gave us directions for custom color matching it. Luckily the local Ace Hardware had two cans of natural untinted Old Masters. We grabbed them and our guy at PPG was able to do a color match with it.

All said and done with were able to match the cabinets on the main floor and have a wood finished front door that matches the cherry cabinets.
