Thinking about solar? The first question is grid-tied or off-grid.

Grid-tied ties into your utility service. The grid is your backup, but the system shuts off during an outage unless you add a battery.
Off-grid means you're your own utility. The batteries have to be sized to what you actually run, and most setups keep a generator as backup. It fits cabins, shops, and remote property.
Hybrid is grid-tied with battery storage, so the essentials stay on when the power goes out.

Whichever way you go, start with your electrical panel. Make sure it has room for the solar breaker before you sign anything.

Cold mornings are back, so the space heaters are coming out. A few basics before you plug one in:

Plug it straight into a wall outlet. No extension cords or power strips.
One heater per outlet, and don't share that circuit with a microwave or hair dryer.
If the plug or outlet feels hot, stop using it and have that outlet looked at.
Keep it 3 feet from beds, curtains, and anything else that can burn.
If the breaker keeps tripping, the circuit is overloaded. Don't just keep resetting it.

Remodeling an office or moving into a new space? Plan the electrical before the walls close up. Make sure there are enough circuits for the desks, printers, and break room. Put outlets and data where the desks will actually go. LED lighting with occupancy sensors in rooms that sit empty. And leave some spare room in the panel for later.

More from the Tractor Supply propane fill station install in El Dorado Hills. Before mounting the conduit and junction box on the cage, we set rivet nuts (nutserts) in the panel.

Why nutserts: they give you real machine threads in thin sheet metal. The box bolts down tight, won't strip or loosen with vibration, and can come off and go back on cleanly for future service. No self-tappers chewing up the panel.

Pulled the cover on a Zinsco panel this week. Seven breakers failing, signs of arcing inside the panel, and real damage on the aluminum bus bars (photos 2 and 3).

Zinsco panels are a known problem. Breakers can fail to trip, and the breaker-to-bus connection can loosen and arc over time. New breakers don't fix a damaged bus, so our recommendation here was a full panel replacement.

Dining room is done at the Taco Bell on Antelope Rd in Citrus Heights.

New pendants over the tables and recessed lighting throughout, and the drink station, order counter, and menu boards are all up and running. Last time we posted this one it was open ceilings and rough-in. This is how it finished.
