For the past two months we have been renovating this beautiful deck in Robinson, IL. I met the homeowner through a mutual friend last fall. I was able to assist her with completing a claim for the manufacturer’s warranty for deteriorating and crumbling composite decking that was installed 13 years ago. (The manufacturer really did stand behind their product and honored the warranty well.) We removed all the old railing and decking hoping that we could immediately install the new decking. However, at that point it was obvious that the frame would require extensive reworking since it did not have proper support. The post covers on the deck roof also had to be replaced by opening the roof to slide them over the posts. The homeowner selected Trex Transcend in Treehouse and Rope Swing colors. The deck floor was completed with hidden fasteners throughout, with no screws visible from the top. The steps were also rebuilt (thanks to Jim Mann!) and railing was installed. We also chose to paint the electrical outlet boxes to match. There is still a small amount of fascia to be installed on the roof beams after the roof is reroofed. I’m very pleased with how it turned out. We really strove for excellence in craftsmanship, even with the help of our granddaughter!

This is our last ramp/deck build. Missy and I will be beginning a new ministry as houseparents with Oblong Children’s Christian Home in Oblong, IL on July 1. Have Ramp, Will Travel! This sunroom ramp was just completed this afternoon. Most of the lumber was cut in the warmth of our workshop, then it was transported 60 miles to Robinson, IL for assembly. It's a joy to see how accessibility transform lives. In this case, you can see the "before" step with a second step up into the doorway. Now, there are easier steps, a 4' wide ramp and a sturdy custom handrail. First Kit Ramp! Due to the cold weather, I cut most of the pieces and dry fitted everything in our somewhat warmer shop. Now it's headed to its new home in Robinson, IL where assembly will begin today. This is an interior ramp, so it is built a little differently than any to date. Stay tuned for photos of the completed project!

Flashback Monday? Here are a few photos of a ramp we constructed in Paris, IL this summer. (I forgot to take photos then, but recently gave it a "post build check-up," as I do with all ramps and decks.) This one is in the shape of a "T" with multiple landing heights. It also features our custom "no trip transition" and concealed Titan post anchors at the ramp entrance. The weather outside was frightful, but this new deck will be delightful...possibly more so after it warms up a bit! We recently completed this one, our biggest yet, near Hutsonville, IL. We will be taking a short break during the month of December, but we are currently scheduling indoor projects for January and beyond. We are also scheduling ramp and deck projects for spring 2019. While some are dreaming of a white Christmas, others are planning for warm, sunny days! Yes, we worked in the snow today. Yes, we probably are a little crazy. But when we say we will complete a project, we see it through until it is finished well. Let us put that same spirit of quality and dedication to work for your INTERIOR PROJECTS. Can you picture yourself sitting with family or friends around a cozy evening autumn fire in this backyard? Missy & I finished this project this afternoon. Missy stained the existing deck with New Redwood while I built the new deck, bench and planter boxes. The owner of this new project has only seen photos so far, but I'm certain she can't wait to add her talented touches of beauty to it. And this all began with only a few ideas of a vision she described to me. RAMP PONCHO: This was my solution late last week when I knew rain was on the way, but this ramp had been prepped for stain and I wanted to keep it dry. You can see even the ducks are tired of the rain. But now the sun is out and it's time to begin applying Chestnut stain. I'll post pictures of the finished project in a few days.

Earlier this summer we built this deck in Geff, IL. We were invited to come back recently to stain it. The owner chose this gorgeousRedwood for the color and we suggested semi-solid for longer lasting protection and ease of maintenance. The before photo is from when it was built, so it had to be cleaned and brightened before stain was applied. The stain was hand brushed for a thorough application. If your ramp or deck could use a facelift, autumn is the perfect time to consider staining it. Even weathered decks can be made presentable again.
