Twenty-five years ago today, on Sept. 11, 2001, with bridges and tunnels closed and hundreds of thousands stranded in Lower Manhattan, commercial mariners did what they do. Tugboats, ferries, and workboats converged on the waterfront and carried more than 500,000 people to safety in less than eight hours. The largest maritime evacuation in recorded history. No plan. No rehearsal. Just mariners.
