Everybody says they want a “reasonable electrician.”

But what does reasonable actually mean?

Do you want the cheapest person who knows how to replace an outlet, change a switch, and connect a few wires?

Or do you want someone who has been trained, educated, tested, and spent years learning the electrical trade?

Because there is a difference between knowing how to make something work and knowing why it isn’t working.

Anybody can learn a few basic electrical tasks.

But what happens when the breaker keeps tripping?

When the voltage isn’t right?

When something was wired incorrectly years ago?

When the problem isn’t obvious?

When you need somebody who can actually diagnose the system instead of just changing parts until something works?

That’s where training and experience show up.

A knowledgeable electrician isn’t charging you just for the hour he spends standing in your house.

You’re paying for the years it took him to know what to look for, what is dangerous, what meets code, what doesn’t, and how to find a problem that somebody else might spend half a day guessing at.

So when people say:

“I need a reasonable electrician.”

My question is:

Reasonable compared to what?

There will always be somebody cheaper.

There will always be somebody who “does electrical work.”

But electrical work isn’t an area where I personally think the goal should be finding the cheapest person who can make the lights come on.

You want somebody who understands what’s happening behind the walls.

There is a difference between learning a task and learning a trade.

There is a difference between doing electrical work and being an electrician.

And yes…

There is going to be a difference in the price too.
