Build Better.... A Message from Kevin
"A homeowner tells me what they want built, and my first move usually isn't a plan — it's a question. Then another. I'll keep asking why until we're five layers past the first answer, because the first answer is almost never the real one.
Here's what I've noticed after enough of these: everybody's either moving away from something that's been bothering them, or moving toward some version of a better life. Most people don't say which one they're doing. They just describe a fix. "I want a bigger island." "I want to knock out this wall." That's the request. It's rarely the actual problem.
So I ask why. Someone wants a bigger island, and three why's in, it's not really about the island — it's that four people can never stand around it at Thanksgiving, or the flow from the fridge to the stove has never worked. Build the island they described and skip that question, and they'll have a bigger island and the exact same problem they started with.
You don't know what you don't know — and that goes both directions. Most homeowners have no way of knowing which questions actually matter. But you can tell a lot about a contractor by whether they're asking them. If someone hands you a plan before they've asked you why more than once, they're not building your solution. They're building your request.
The real fix is never the first one somebody hands you. It's the one still standing after somebody's asked why five times."
