Successful grassland management is about using the right combination and timing of mowing, prescribed fire, and herbicide to address invasive species and woody encroachment while maintaining a healthy, diverse plant community.

Conservation management is always evolving. Sometimes the best approach is thinking outside the box.

Tackling some seriously dense buckthorn in a steep Driftless Area valley in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin.

The terrain is too steep for mechanical equipment, so this one requires good old-fashioned hand cutting and treatment. A tough site, but well worth the effort to open things back up for native vegetation and improve the health of the forest.

This oak seed-tree harvest is designed to regenerate the next generation of oak naturally. A portion of the mature, healthy oak overstory is retained as seed trees, providing an acorn source while the harvest opens the canopy and increases sunlight reaching the forest floor.

Oak regeneration requires substantially more light than shade-tolerant species such as maple and basswood. By creating these conditions, the harvest gives oak seedlings a competitive advantage and helps maintain oak as an important component of the future forest.

This is silviculture in action—using carefully planned disturbance to mimic natural forest processes while producing timber and establishing the next generation of trees.

And none of this happens at landscape scale without commercial logging contractors. Professional loggers are one of our greatest assets for putting young forest on the ground across thousands of acres. Their equipment, expertise, and ability to efficiently implement well-designed harvests are critical to creating the diverse age classes and habitat our forests need.

We recently completed a 5-acre habitat improvement project at the Augusta State Wildlife Area in Eau Claire County, sponsored by the Chippewa Valley Ruffed Grouse Society.

The project focused on creating and improving young forest habitat by mulching dense woody vegetation and smaller trees, while retaining selected larger trees and oaks. This creates a more open, diverse forest structure that benefits Ruffed Grouse, American Woodcock, and a variety of other wildlife species.

The work was completed under the oversight of Wisconsin DNR biologists, with the goal of improving habitat conditions and creating better early-successional forest habitat.

Projects like this are a great example of how active forest management can improve wildlife habitat while maintaining healthy and diverse woodlands.

This morning we finished up pouring the last section of bike trail replacement as a component of the rip-rap maintenance project for the Chippewa Falls Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Dpt. in Riverfront Park (Downtown Chippewa Falls).

Also, a huge THANK YOU to Stelter Inc. for redi-mix and a pumping truck to put concrete in a hard to reach spot with precision and efficiency!!
