🗑️🐷 Fun Fact Friday! 🐷🗑️

Before modern landfills and waste management, many communities had something called a “piggery.”

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, food scraps and other organic waste were collected and taken to pig farms, where the pigs would eat much of it. The pigs became sick because the industries allowed the pigs to eat un-cooked trash. Soon, a law passed stating that the garbage had to be cooked to sanitize germs. Pretty gross considering these are the same pigs that were served to people to eat! However, It was one of the earliest forms of recycling and waste reduction!

Of course, as we learned more about food safety and disease prevention, this practice was phased out, and today’s waste disposal methods became much safer and more environmentally responsible.

Thankfully, these days your leftovers don’t end up feeding pigs, they end up in the hands of your favorite local roll-off company instead. 😉🚛

Around here, it’s about more than hauling roll-offs.

Being a small, family-owned company means we get to take the time to connect with our community. When these young men asked if they could check out and ride in one of our roll-off trucks, Brian was all in. Watching their excitement reminded us that sometimes the smallest gestures leave the biggest impression.

Thank you for letting us be a small part of your day! We hope you had as much fun as we did! 🚛💛

If you couldn't tell based on the side eye 😒 he is giving me, Johnson Roll-Off Vice Paw-sident, Otis, wasn't very excited when he realized we were going to the truck for pictures rather than a ride with the window down! 😂

Otis is modeling in front of one of our smaller trucks which is PAW-sitively great for residential deliveries, tighter spaces, and when you live on a road that has bans on during the spring!

🛏️ Waste Wednesday: Let’s Talk Mattresses!

One of the questions we get asked most is, “Can I throw a mattress in my dumpster?”

The answer is yes! However, there is an extra disposal fee per mattress, and we ask that mattresses be placed on top of the load.

Why? Mattresses can’t go into the regular landfill with other debris. They have to be separated for proper disposal. If they’re buried under other materials, our drivers have to dig them out, which slows down the unloading process.

There’s also a safety reason. Mattresses can get caught in landfill equipment. In fact, it's becoming increasingly more common and has happened multiple times in a few short years.

By placing your mattress on top, you’re helping us keep our drivers safe, our equipment running, and the disposal process efficient.

If you ever have questions about what can (or can’t) go in your dumpster, give us a call! We’re always happy to talk!

FUN FACT FRIDAY 🗑️♻️

Interested in a little trash talk?

In 1937 the Dempster brothers patented the Dempster Dumpmaster due to the clear need for efficiency. Their design was a game changer, making servicing commercial routes much easier as these large bins could quickly be emptied into the truck with minimal manual labor. Officially, in 1958, the "Dempster Dinosaur" was unveiled as what we now recognize as the first "modern" roll off.

In reality, this was a type of sliding hook-lift hoist however it is categorized as a roll off.

The trash talk is true.....

After many years in the industry, Brian has made the decision to officially begin stepping into partial retirement and, as part of that transition, Johnson Roll-Off Service has sold the commercial and residential dumpster portion of the business to Harter’s Expert Disposal of Eau Claire, effective June 1st, 2026.

We are incredibly grateful for the support, loyalty, and relationships this community has given us over the years. Thank you for supporting our family-owned business and trusting us to serve you.

Brian worked closely with Harter’s to ensure customers would continue to receive the dependable, hometown service they deserve.

Johnson Roll-Off Service will still continue offering open-top roll-off dumpsters and receivers.
