What a crazy insane story that all started with a $35 recliner.

OHIO WOMAN REFUSES TO RETURN $43,000 FOUND INSIDE $35 ESTATE-SALE RECLINER

Family says the money belonged to their late grandfather. The woman who bought the chair says she bought everything that came with it.

POSSUM CREEK, Ohio — What started as a $35 estate-sale purchase has turned into a dispute over $43,000 in cash after a local woman discovered dozens of envelopes hidden inside an old recliner.

According to 52-year-old Denise Harper, she purchased the brown recliner earlier this month from an estate sale outside Possum Creek after her husband said he needed a chair for their garage.

“He sat in it and said it was comfortable, so I gave them $35 and we loaded it up,” Harper said. “That was pretty much it.”

Several days later, her husband noticed a crinkling sound coming from underneath the seat.

Thinking something had fallen inside the chair, the couple turned it over and removed part of the fabric covering the bottom.

Inside, they found an envelope containing $1,000.

Then another.

And another.

Harper said the couple eventually removed 43 envelopes, each containing $1,000 in cash.

The total was $43,000.

Word of the discovery eventually reached the family that held the estate sale.

According to family members, the recliner belonged to their late grandfather, who had a habit of hiding cash around his home because he did not trust banks.

The family says they had no idea money was hidden inside the chair when they sold it and have asked Harper to return it.

She has refused.

“I didn’t steal anything,” Harper said. “I paid what they asked for the chair. Nobody told me to check it for money before I left.”

The family argues that while Harper purchased the recliner, she did not knowingly purchase their grandfather’s savings.

The estate-sale company has reportedly declined to get involved, pointing to paperwork stating that merchandise was sold “as is” and that all sales were final.

Whether that language also applies to $43,000 accidentally left inside an item could ultimately be decided in court.

The family says it is now considering legal action if the money is not returned.

For now, Harper says the cash is being kept in a safe location and has not been spent.

The recliner, meanwhile, is still sitting in her husband’s garage.
