OK, we are getting organized and ready to get the biochar out there! We will be offering it in household, yard and dump truck load sizes. And we will have an ordering system up on the website at olympicbiochar.com. For now, if you are interested, you can email us over at [email protected].

And we also look forward to sharing more information about how to integrate biochar into your animal bedding, compost and fertilizer systems and more.

The many uses of biochar according to: www.biochar-journal.org:

“Biochar is much too valuable for it to be just added to soil without using it at least once for other beneficial purposes. Basic uses include: drinking water filtration, sanitation of human and kitchen wastes, and as a composting agent. All of these uses have been documented in many different pre-industrial cultures. In the modern world, the uses multiply: adsorber in functional clothing, insulation in the building industry, as carbon electrodes in super-capacitors for energy storage, food packaging, waste water treatment, air cleaning, silage agent or feed supplement.”

What is Biochar?

Some basics here—

“Biochar is the lightweight black residue, consisting of carbon and ashes, remaining after the pyrolysis of biomass, and is a form of charcoal. Biochar is defined by the International Biochar Initiative as the ‘solid material obtained from the thermochemical conversion of biomass in an oxygen-limited environment.’

Biochar is mainly used in soils to increase soil aeration, reduce soil emissions of greenhouse gases, reduce nutrient leaching and reduce soil acidity and can increase soil water content in coarse soils.Biochar application may increase soil fertility and agricultural productivity.

Beyond soil application, biochar can be used for …water retention in soil, and as an additive for animal fodder. There is an increasing focus on the potential role of biochar application in global climate change mitigation. Due to its refractory stability, biochar can stay in soils or other environments for thousands of years. This has given rise to the concept of Biochar Carbon Removal, i.e. carbon sequestration in the form of biochar. Carbon removal can be achieved when high-quality biochar is applied to soils, or added as a substitute material to construction materials such as concrete and tar.“

Hey folks! We are excited to share this announcement from our intrepid and impassioned biochar champions Francesco and Joan. We’re looking forward to carrying the torch of biochar as we continue to learn its myriad beneficial uses, and we will be sharing more in the days ahead…

Fellow Biocharistas,
For over ten years, we have conversed about biochar’s properties, uses, and benefits with people of all ages and walks of life on the Peninsula, around the country and beyond. This gave us great pleasure and put smiles on our faces. We will continue to share what we know about biochar with anyone who will listen, but we will no longer be the faces of Olympic Biochar.

We are delighted to say that we found the perfect folks to take Olympic Biochar to the next level. You probably know Keith and Crystie Kisler as two of the co-creators of the amazing Finnriver Farm & Cidery in Chimacum [and now operating Chimacum Valley Grainery]. They are very excited to take on a new project with the goal to keep the biochar right here on the Peninsula, exploring new ways to improve local soils. We are continuing to work with the Kislers to keep the transition as smooth as possible. You will still be able to purchase Olympic Biochar for your needs. Keith can be reached by emailing him at [email protected] for now.

Thank you for exploring the use of biochar and sequestering carbon in your gardens, farms, compost, etc. Thank you for supporting locally produced Olympic Biochar and being part of this journey with us.

In gratitude,
Francesco Tortorici and Joan Cole
