Chico, California Founded in 1946, Modern has grown steadily, recently celebrating their 75th anniversary in business.

Modern Building Company is a diverse northern California-based general contractor, excited to continue the legacy of building with passion and doing what we love to do. The company’s first project was building Quonset huts during World War II. Since those early days, Modern has continued to expand their capabilities and experience to better serve their clients and continue to add to their long list of raving fans. Although the majority of our work is in Northern California, we are licensed in the states of California, Oregon, Nevada and Montana. Work in these neighboring states is the direct result of satisfied clients who requested we travel to meet their needs on subsequent projects, including as far as North Carolina. The owners of Modern Building are all “hands on”, at the office and engaged daily, involved in a wide variety of building projects. Our office staff includes a diverse team of project managers, assistant project managers, estimators, project engineers, and experienced front office administrative personnel. In the field, we have over 20 project superintendents and foremen, and over 40 of our own carpenters, concrete finishers and laborers. Modern executes our concrete work in-house. Today, Modern is engaged in a wide variety of construction types - concrete tilt wall facilities, multi-story steel frame buildings, single and multi-story wood frame buildings on concrete slabs, pre-engineered steel buildings, commercial, health care and medical offices, schools, retail structures, tenant improvements, apartments and more. We pride ourselves at being our clients’ one-stop-shop for all of their building needs, with projects ranging in size from 1,000 square feet to over 800,000 square feet, and from $1,000 to multi-million dollar contracts.

Yesterday, Modern Building was honored to co-host the groundbreaking for Habitat for Humanity’s newest project, The Purpose Place Apartments Phase 3 in Orland, CA! We’re incredibly proud to continue our partnership with Habitat for Humanity and help create housing that gives unhoused and low-income members of our community an opportunity to get back on their feet.One of the most meaningful moments was hearing current residents share how much their homes have changed their lives. We don’t often get to hear firsthand the impact our work makes, and it made this groundbreaking especially meaningful to our team. Our CEO James Seegert, Project Executive Phil Straw, Project Manager Andrew Headley, Assistant Project Manager David Velasco, and Intern Owen Day even grabbed the gold shovels and helped officially break ground! We’re proud to be part of a project that builds more than apartments—it builds opportunity.

Exciting progress at the student housing project for the College of the Siskiyous. The slab has been completed and structural steel and wood framing is underway. Modern is very excited to see this project going vertical. What was once an empty parking lot is starting to look like a new building as Modern and our trade partners continue to push forward. On August 13, Modern Building was proud to celebrate the ribbon cutting for the new Inspire School of Arts & Sciences Campus! This project represents more than a new school—it’s a place where creativity, education, and opportunity will come together for students for years to come. We’re grateful for the dedication and collaboration of our team, the Inspire team, Chico Unified School District, our trade partners, and everyone who helped bring this vision to life. Most importantly, we’re honored to have played a role in creating a space that will serve the Inspire community and its students for generations. Modern Building Co. was honored to join Butte County officials, community leaders, and project partners at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Butte County Probation Facility.
This new facility represents a significant investment in the community and will provide a modern, purpose-built space to support the important work of Butte County Probation for years to come. We are proud to serve as the general contractor on this project and look forward to bringing this vision to life. Modern recently completed the ground up construction of a 27,000SF fabrication facility in Marysville, CA. 17ft roll up doors with an 8ft perimeter CMU block wall, interior office, lockers and restrooms.

Project Complete! The new Gridley High School Science Building is ready to inspire the next generation of students. The project features state-of-the-art science labs, modern classrooms, a dedicated prep room, and a covered outdoor learning quad designed for collaboration, presentations, and hands-on learning. We’re proud to have partnered on a project that will support STEM education and student success for years to come.

Progress is happening, and it’s time to celebrate! Our team and United Rentals, hosted a Subcontractor Appreciation BBQ to recognize the incredible partners helping bring Inspire School of Arts and Sciences, in Chico CA, to life and to celebrate some major milestones along the way.
Over 5,000 tons of asphalt paving complete Permanent power installed, including:�• Over 1/2 mile of conduit�• Nearly 2 miles of primary power wire pulled�• Approximately 20,000 feet (almost 4 miles) of secondary wire installed to serve all of the buildings
These accomplishments are the result of outstanding teamwork, dedication, and collaboration from everyone involved. Thank you to everyone for your hard work and commitment to this project.
