The winter does not seem to leave Chicago anytime soon, and a typical home this December already used at least 100 therms of natural gas more than last December for heat. This could translate into additional $50 more a month for the next 2 to 3 months.
A few simple things could save you a few bucks in heating gas: 1- change your furnace filter if you have not done it since Thanksgiving. 2- lowering your hot water temperature to 120 degree, anything above that is just money wasting. Lowering your hot water temperature by 10 degrees could save you 3% - 5% of your natural gas bill. 3- install a water-saving shower head. 4- lower the furnace thermostat and use space heater.
