For affected single-plunger traction machines, there are two approaches to evaluate — and they have very different installation scopes.

Path A: Dual-Plunger Retrofit Kit. Adds mechanical redundancy at the brake assembly. Requires work on the machine itself, may require OEM coordination, and includes machine room access and downtime.

Path B: Rail-Gripping Safety Brake. HydraSafe mounts on the guide rail, outside the machine brake assembly. No machine modification, removal, or OEM coordination. Physical rail mounting is typically completed within six hours inside a permitted project.

Return-to-service timing depends on permitting, testing, and acceptance. Confirm the accepted approach with the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) or your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

ASME A17.3-2020 is the safety code for existing elevators, and it is being adopted jurisdiction by jurisdiction.

Nevada, Oklahoma, Georgia, Seattle, Phoenix, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Alabama, and Dallas are among the jurisdictions with A17.3-2020 adoption activity.

Adoption and local amendments vary. If you own, manage, or specify traction elevators in any of these areas, confirm the current local rule and enforcement date with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for every project — then talk to our team about documentation for your review.

Brake code requirements are not the same everywhere. Before specifying work to address unintended/ascending movement on a traction elevator, confirm four things with the Authority Having Jurisdiction:

01 — The adopted code
02 — Local amendments
03 — Device acceptance
04 — The project deadline

Our 2027 Brake Code Compliance page outlines what to review and the documentation our team can provide for jurisdiction-specific review.

Have you seen our updated website yet? https://hydrasafebrake.com

We rebuilt it so you can quickly find what matters for your role on an elevator modernization project. Visitors will find a clear walkthrough of how the patented HydraSafe Brake grips directly to the guide rail to stop unintended/ascending movement, technical specs and documentation, installation guidance, and our CSA Group certification and Liftinstituut credentials.

There's something for everyone:

Consultants: Detailed specs and documentation so you can specify with confidence.

Contractors: Retrofit installation resources, plus support and training from our team. Installs in hours, with no machine-room modification.

Building owners and managers: A clear path to reducing liability and meeting ASME A17.1 compliance.

When the subject is life safety, certification matters.

HydraSafe Brake is CSA Group certified and trusted by Liftinstituut in the Netherlands — built to the world's most rigorous safety standards and field-proven globally.

For consultants writing specs and owners planning modernization, that means a code-conscious solution with the documentation to support it as ASME A17.1 requirements continue to tighten.

This is the crew that made NAEC happen.

For the entire show, this team showed the industry how HydraSafe Brake stops unintended/ascending movement right at the rail. They ran demos, sketched retrofit plans on napkins, and met a lot of new friends. We're proud of them and grateful to everyone who visited.

Next step: turning those conversations into safer elevators. Request a consultation at https://hydrasafebrake.com

That's a wrap on NAEC 2026 — and what a show it was.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by Booth 648 in Chicago. Our team had outstanding conversations with consultants, contractors, building owners, and industry partners about modernization, ASME A17.1 compliance, and stopping unintended/ascending movement with a brake that grips directly to the rail.

We're leaving Chicago energized by the interest in HydraSafe Brake and grateful for the relationships built and renewed on the show floor. Thank you as well to NAEC and the organizers for another exceptional event.

If we connected at the show, we'll be following up soon. If we missed you, let's talk: hydrasafebrake.com

See you next year.

Modernization shouldn't mean extended downtime for your building.

HydraSafe Brake is designed for retrofit. Installation takes hours, not days, and requires no machine-room modification, so the upgrade respects your schedule and your tenants.

For contractors, that means a simplified install backed by full support and training. For owners and managers, it means added life-safety protection with minimal disruption.

How does HydraSafe Brake stop unintended/ascending movement? Three steps.

01 — Detects. Continuous monitoring identifies unintended/ascending movement caused by a hydraulic, electrical, or mechanical fault.

02 — Engages directly on the rail. The brake grips the elevator guide rail, bypassing the drive system for immediate, reliable engagement.

03 — Brings the elevator to a controlled stop. Smooth braking protects passengers and equipment.
