Stone samples, scenery, & a sluice gate – oh my! In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built the lovely Nettle Creek Aqueduct across the I&M Canal. Things ( !) happened in 2014, so we’re working with EXP and Illinois Capital Development BoardlopmentBoard to rehabilitate this crossing. Team JLK ArchitectsLKArchitects enjoyed the gorgeous scenery while gathering existing concrete, stone, & mortar samples to ensure new materials match the historic ones. We’ll be reusing some of the original stone to build a seating area, allowing visitors to sit & enjoy the tranquil space. Historic artifacts & info will also be on display near the aqueduct as a bonus!

JLK is proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity WomenBuild!

The life-changing benefits of affordable homeownership are immense: it improves school performance, decreases crime, improves financial outcomes, and enhances the health and well-being of children and adults – just to name a few. But due to gendered barriers like the pay gap and its impact on credit access, and uneven child care responsibilities that limit time and financial resources, it is far more difficult for women to become homeowners. JLK Architects and Holabird & Root are teaming up this year to do something about it.

Help us reach our goal so we can help these women unlock the benefits that homeownership provides and prove that there is nothing a committed group of women can’t achieve when they come together.

JLK is working with TransSystems and Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill to provide historic preservation, Section 106 consulting services, and architectural design assistance for one of Chicago’s most utilized CTA stations at the intersection of State and Lake Streets. The Historic Preservation scope of work includes determination of the Area of Potential Effect (APE) for the project, documentation of all potentially affected historic properties, and overall assistance with NEPA compliance.

Renderings unveiled Wednesday of a redesigned State and Lake CTA station show a $180 million “light-filled new transit hub” to replace the more than 100-year-old downtown Chicago “L” stop.

Megan and Susan were proud to speak at the Traditional Building Conference Series on the topic “Spring Hill Ranch in the Tall Grass Prairie: Ethno-preservation”.

Having worked as historic preservation architects to an award-winning contractor, Meg and Susan outlined their strategy for guiding contracted restoration work. They shared how understanding the cultural life of the ranch guided the stakeholder team for decision-making regarding repairs and rehabilitation of the main house on this important National Register site, with a period of significance dating to 1881.

This seminar is available on-demand from the Traditional Building Conference.

Meg Kindelin speaks on a virtual book tour- Modern in the Middle

Famed as the birthplace of that icon of twentieth-century architecture, the skyscraper, Chicago also cultivated a more humble but no less consequential form of modernism–the private residence. Modern in the Middle: Chicago Houses 1929-75 explores the substantial yet overlooked role that Chicago and its suburbs played in the development of the modern single-family house in the twentieth century. In a city often associated with the outsize reputations of Frank Lloyd Wright and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the examples discussed in this generously illustrated book expand and enrich the story of the region’s built environment.

Co-authored by architectural historian, preservationist and Landmarks Illinois Emeritus Board Member Susan Benjamin, and IIT professor Michelangelo Sabatino,...
