In honor of Women’s History Month, we would like to recognize the women of SMNG A. We are grateful for their leadership, perspectives, and contributions to shaping our communities and built environment. In the US, 27% of licensed architects are women, and we are looking forward to seeing that percentage grow! 👷📈

For our archive series, we are highlighting Mark T. Skinner West Elementary School in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, a collaboration with Chicago Public Schools and the Public Building Commission of Chicago.

We are featuring the school’s historic rooftop water tank. Rescued from the former Galvin Manufacturing Co., the 20-foot steel tank was relocated, restored, and installed on new masonry walls overlooking the school’s vegetative roof. The tank serves as a stormwater capture cistern for irrigation of the vegetation and was a contributing element to achieving USGBC LEED Gold for Schools certification.

The Skinner water tank’s story was recently featured in the award-winning student documentary Hidden Skyline, an award-winning documentary produced by Serena Adeleye, Ella Munnelly, and Arianna Spruille from Loyola University Chicago’s School of Communication with Professor John. P. Goheen in the Spring of 2025, exploring the overlooked story of Chicago’s historic rooftop water tanks.

History restored, community reimagined!

We are proud to have received the AIA Illinois 2025 Honor Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation – Project Construction Value $5M and Above for the renovation of the Riis Park Fieldhouse.

SMNG A Ltd., in partnership with Forma Architecture Ltd., restored this Chicago Park District building’s historic character by preserving the masonry, stone features, steel sash windows, and rebuilding the copper roof. The facility was upgraded for ADA accessibility, all-electric systems, and flexible community spaces. The renovated Riis Park Fieldhouse adjoins the new CPS Belmont-Cragin Elementary School, designed by our team, and both facilities share the new gymnatorium, which serves both school students during the day and afterschool programs through the Park District.

It was an inspiring evening celebrating architectural excellence and the dedication of firms and teams transforming communities across Illinois.

Meet Chelsea Nguyen, an architectural designer completing her first year at SMNG A Ltd today! Originally from Indianapolis, Chelsea moved to Chicago to immerse herself in the city’s rich architectural landscape and to complete her Bachelor of Architecture degree at the Illinois Institute of Technology, with a minor in structural engineering.

Since joining SMNG A, Chelsea has been working on an interior renovation for the Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center, several projects with Chicago Public Schools, and most recently, the renovation of Hilda’s Place for Connections for the Homeless.

Beyond her project work, Chelsea manages the firm’s social media presence, highlighting the SMNG A’s projects and community engagement efforts. She also volunteers with Architects in Schools, continuing a passion for teaching and outreach that began in college.

In her free time, Chelsea enjoys creating fiber art, especially crochet pieces, exploring new food spots around the city, and finding new trinkets at the thrift stores!

The renovation of The Field School campus’ main building, listed in the National Register of Historic Places and located in the historic Austin Town Hall Park Historic District, is now complete and open for the 2025–2026 school year! This milestone marks the completion of a two-phase campus transformation of the former CPS Francis Scott Key Elementary School. The renovation includes a restoration of the historic facade and interiors, full replacement of MEP systems, elevator addition and accessibility improvements to create an inclusive learning environment.

Located in Chicago’s Belmont-Cragin neighborhood, the newly renovated Jacob Riis Fieldhouse is set to become a vital community hub, through significant accessibility improvements and restoration.

Working within the requirements of the Chicago Rehabilitation Code and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the design team introduced key accessibility upgrades, such as a new elevator, accessible ramp, stage platform lift, and restrooms, all while preserving the building’s historic character. The fieldhouse will support diverse programming for all ages by offering large multi-purpose club rooms, an auditorium with stage and theatrical system, an art room with kilns, and a teen lounge.

– No. 3: This week, we’re highlighting Bank Note Place, a 118-unit loft condominium conversion in Chicago’s South Loop, completed in 2004. The project consists of three historic buildings organized around a private, landscaped courtyard! Three additional floors were added to the north building, and a new building was inserted at the west end of the courtyard—blending contemporary design with the original building’s historic character.

– No. 2: Back with another project from our archives – Rambler Lofts, a collaboration with Ken Schroeder and Ann Temple. Completed in 2001, this loft repurposes a warehouse and former Rambler Car Dealership into six residential units. Two-story loft units were created by removing part of the warehouse roof and floor, making space for a 12-foot-wide landscaped courtyard along the south side of the 50-foot-wide building.

– No. 1: Kicking off our new series with Powerhouse Lofts, a collaboration with Ken Schroeder and Ann Temple — a former powerhouse reimagined into two residences units. White glazed brick walls, copper windows, distressed ceilings, and concrete floors create a rich palette for living. An original truss crane remains at ceiling level, celebrating its industrial past.
