All of is at Kuhn Plumbing would like to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. Here are some tips to keep your plumbing system in working order as we kick off the holiday season.
1. If you're having a large gathering switch to single ply toilet paper in the guest bathrooms and powder rooms. This will help lessen the chance of your toilets clogging during the party, especially if you have newer low consumption toilets.
2. If you have toilets that have the dual flush option kindly tell your guests or post a sign above the toilet to use the full flush option. 1.0 gallon flushes are not designed to accept toilet paper in any amount.
3. Garbage disposals are excellent ways to dispose of small amounts of kitchen scraps; however, when peeling large amounts of vegetables putting them all down the disposal can lead to jammed disposals or clogged sink drains and stacks.
4. If you do use your disposal always let the water run while the disposal is in use and 1 min after the disposal is shut off. If you feel that you've used you disposal a lot fill your sink bowls completely with water and allow to drain. The large amount of water will help clear out any remaining food waste in the line.
5. Things that should never be put in the disposal: fibrous items (artichoke leaves, corn husks) banana peels, large amounts or rice, and pasta.

Employing these tips can help you and your home have an enjoyable and problem free holidays.

With the fall season upon us now is a good time to prepare your home's plumbing system for winter. Disconnect hoses from your outdoor hose faucets. If your hose faucets have indoor shut offs, shut them off and drain the system for added protection from freezing. Clean leaves away from outdoor area drains to prevent stairwells or sunken patios from flooding during heavy rains or sudden snow melts. Consider having your main sewer rodded now while the weather is relatively nice in order to avoided having to have it done during the winter. Heavy snows and low temps can make rodding difficult and lead to higher costs.

The severity of this year's long and extreme winter has caused many hose faucets to burst. This damage will go unnoticed until use of the faucet. Please immediately look inside the house under the location of the hose for signs or sounds of water leakage. If leakage is observed, discontinue use of the hose immediately.
