Every firm has a beginning. Ours started with two Eds and one shared vision.
Back in the early days, Ed Matthei and Ed Colin weren’t chasing trends or awards—they were focused on people. They believed that architecture, when done right, could quietly transform lives. Hospitals weren’t just buildings to them; they were places where people heal, families grow, and medical breakthroughs happen.
With that belief, they founded Matthei & Colin Architects and Engineers. No grand launch. No headlines. Just two architects with deep integrity, a few loyal clients, and a passion for designing spaces that mattered.
They built the firm project by project, relationship by relationship. And they built it to last—grounded in trust, collaboration, and thoughtful design that serves a greater purpose.
Decades later, we still carry that spirit forward. The names on the door remain the same, but the team has grown—and so has our reach. Yet the heart of the firm is unchanged.
We’re still here to design with care. To listen first. To create spaces that make a difference.
That’s how we started. That’s who we are. And we’re even more excited about where we’re headed.
