RW Collins had the privilege of performing site work at the CTA Brown Line Western Station in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. During our time on site, we encountered many remnants of Chicago’s historic railcar infrastructure, a fascinating reminder of how deep the city’s history runs beneath the surface.

Chicago’s history of public transit stretches back to the pre–Civil War era, when horse-drawn streetcars first appeared. By the 1880s, cable-drawn and electric streetcars had begun to reshape the city, alongside the first “el” trains in the 1890s. These streetcars paved the way for what would become the world’s largest cable-rail system at the turn of the 20th century, then known as Chicago Surface Lines (CSL). In the 1940s, the CSL was rebranded as part of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), ushering in the modern era of subways and buses that keep the city moving today.

As an underground contractor in Chicago, we’re constantly reminded that every project tells a story of progress and legacy. Each piece of buried infrastructure we uncover connects us to the generations who built this great city before us.

Our team recently completed the removal of six underground storage tanks (USTs) as part of a former fueling facility closure and site redevelopment project.

The work included tank removal, site preparation, backfilling operations, and coordination with project partners to prepare the property for restoration and future use. Projects like these require careful planning, safe ex*****on, and close attention to environmental compliance every step of the way.

We are proud of our field crews and project team for completing another challenging project safely and efficiently while helping move a previously developed site toward its next chapter.

RWC recently completed a major environmental remediation project at a historic Chicago site spanning two city blocks. Our team removed over 6,200 tons of contaminated material, tackling multiple hot spots and removing existing structures to reach clean native clay. The site was then backfilled and compacted, setting the stage for future development. We also completed a full UST investigation with no underground storage tanks found.

RWC worked with Chicago Public Schools to revitalize the playground and outdoor space at Goethe Elementary School in Logan Square. The school also features a state-of-the-art artificial turf soccer field and a new track.

Goethe Elementary School is one of the oldest active elementary schools in the Chicago school system. Built in 1895, the school’s name pays homage to the German poet, historian, and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who famously worked in many subject areas. There is also a historic monument to Goethe in Lincoln Park, unveiled in 1913.

The school has a long history as a vital part of the local Logan Square community, serving students throughout Chicago’s ever-evolving cultural landscape. Goethe has educated many prominent members of the community, including Anthony Quezada, one of the youngest Aldermen in Chicago's long history.
