It seems logical that your AC has to work twice as hard to cool a hot house, but the truth is that it is much more efficient to turn the system down when you are away. Houses lose coolness over time, and letting the temperature rise slightly while you are at work saves a significant amount of energy. Turning it back on when you return will not damage your system or use more power than leaving it running for nine empty hours. For the best balance of comfort and savings, consider upgrading to a programmable thermostat.
