With this severe cold spell coming in the next few days, here are a few recommendations to keep your pipes from freezing.
Once again we are being hit with severe weather causing many pipes to freeze/split. Pipes are most susceptible to freezing when located:
In an outside wall;
Under a sink on an outside wall;
In an unheated crawlspace.
When pipes are frozen you'll find that when you turn the faucet on, no water will come out or it will flow out in a trickle. As soon as you realize a pipe is frozen you need to take immediate action.
If the pipe burst (even if still frozen without leaking) then immediately shut off the water to the faucet locally or at the water main (usually located in basement at front of house).
Techniques for Thawing an Exposed Frozen Pipe
Hair Dryer
One of the best and safest ways to thaw the pipe is to heat the area with a high power hair dryer. Again, make sure to open the faucet and then heat the pipe working back from the faucet toward the frozen blockage.
Small Portable Heater
If you have one of those small powerful heaters they work great when warming pipes under a kitchen or vanity base cabinet. Direct the heater onto the frozen section of pipe.
Keep a trickle of water running in you furthest faucet, to keep the water in your lines moving.
