🚨🏡 WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN A HOMEOWNER'S DREAM PROJECT RUNS STRAIGHT INTO A PROBLEM BEFORE CONSTRUCTION EVEN BEGINS? 🚨
Yesterday, we had the opportunity to meet with a homeowner who runs her own rug business. She's looking to create a separate entrance to her basement so customers can come over, browse her inventory, and make moving those beautiful rugs in and out of the house a whole lot easier.
Sounds simple enough, right? Well, not exactly!
The homeowner already had an idea of where she wanted the entrance, but there was one fairly significant problem. An existing easement prevented us from building in that location. After spending time imagining how something might look and function, discovering that your original plan isn't possible can be incredibly frustrating.
But that's where having an experienced remodeling contractor can make all the difference.
Instead of concentrating on what we couldn't do, we started walking around the property, looking at the foundation, the existing windows, the driveway, and how everything was positioned. We wanted to find a solution that would make sense structurally, functionally, and aesthetically without creating unnecessary expenses.
Eventually, we found ourselves standing in front of another section of the house, and an entirely different possibility started taking shape.
Why not create the basement entrance right here?
The driveway is conveniently located nearby, which could make transporting inventory considerably easier. By incorporating a short walkway with a 90-degree turn, we could create a dedicated entrance while preserving access through the rest of the yard.
Now here's where things get fun, because once you figure out where something might work, you get to start imagining what it could become!
Do we pour a clean, traditional concrete sidewalk that complements the existing home? Would decorative pavers create a warmer, more inviting appearance? Could combining both materials give us the best balance of durability, functionality, and curb appeal?
Of course, there's considerably more involved than simply cutting an opening into a basement wall. Excavation, foundation modifications, structural support, drainage, waterproofing, and properly constructing the stairwell all have to be considered before a project like this can move forward.
Those are the details homeowners don't always see when they're imagining the finished product, but they're also the details that can determine whether an improvement becomes something they enjoy for decades or something they regret.
When the homeowner asked if we could put together a couple of pictures to help her visualize the possibilities, we decided to have a little fun with it. Using the existing property photographs, we developed two preliminary design concepts showing how the new entrance and surrounding walkway might come together.
They're certainly not perfect architectural renderings, but sometimes a simple picture can help turn an idea into something you can actually imagine standing in front of.
And that's the part of remodeling we've always enjoyed. Every house is different, every homeowner has different needs, and occasionally the most rewarding projects begin with somebody telling you that what they really want isn't possible.
Imagine being a small-business owner who simply wants to make life a little easier, create a welcoming space for customers, and continue growing something you've worked incredibly hard to build. Then imagine discovering that the entrance you've been dreaming about can't go where you originally planned.
Now picture someone walking around your home, pointing to a completely different location, and suddenly showing you a possibility you hadn't even considered.
We're sharing the original photographs here, and we'll put both design concepts in the comments.
If this were your home, would you choose the clean simplicity of concrete, the character of decorative pavers, or a combination of both to create an entrance that looks like it was always meant to be there? ❤️
