The Work Behind SHOWTIME!

My father, the first stump grinder in our family, once compared stump grinding to the NFL. Fans tune in on Sunday and see kickoff. They see performance.

What they don’t see is everything that happens beforehand; preparation, planning, practice, repetition. The game is won long before kickoff.

Professional stump grinding works much the same way.

When we arrive on site, it’s SHOWTIME. But by then, much of the work has already happened. Equipment maintenance. Sharpened grinder teeth. Utility locates through VA811. Route planning and job coordination.

A lot of that preparation is invisible by design. Our customers shouldn’t have to think about any of it. They care about the outcome. Our job is to make sure the preparation has already been done so ex*****on looks controlled, efficient, and dependable. When the key turns and the grinder comes to life, it’s SHOWTIME. We’re ready to perform.

That’s the work behind the work.

Some jobs don’t give you a clean path in.

This one required removing the outrigger wheels to fit through a narrow gate, transitioning down a ramp over steps, then resetting the machine to handle the work inside the yard.

Before any equipment moved, we walked the site and built the plan. Every step was thought through ahead of time so the crew could execute without hesitation once we arrived.

Inside the backyard, the work tightened up even more. Roots throughout the yard and a medium-sized stump positioned between a decorative brick wall and a chain-link fence. No room for error. Just controlled, deliberate grinding.

This is where preparation shows up. Not in theory, but in how the job actually gets done.

Saturday we spent the morning at Byrd Park near Dogwood Dell Amphitheater in Richmond for the 12th Annual David Tate Urban Forestry Service Day.

This annual event is held in memory of arborist David Tate and brings together the City of Richmond, local tree companies, and the broader green industry to take care of one of the city’s parks — pruning, removals, risk mitigation, and planting.

It’s also a reminder of how tight-knit the tree care community is and the importance of looking out for each other.

Our role was on the back end of that work.
We handled stump grinding for both previous removals and trees taken down during the event, making sure the site was left clean and usable when the day wrapped up.

This was our 4th year participating, and it’s always a good reminder of how connected the Richmond tree care community really is. Different companies, different roles, same expectation for how the work gets done.

We appreciate being part of it.

Some of the most important work we do each day happens before the first stump is ever touched.

Every morning our team inspects the grinder before heading to job sites. Cutting teeth are rotated, flipped, or replaced as needed so the machine continues cutting efficiently throughout the day.

In the second photo you can see the difference between a worn grinder tooth and a new one. These small components do the actual cutting work, and their condition has a direct impact on grinding efficiency and the quality of the finished result.

The daily inspection is part of a broader preventative maintenance routine that includes regularly checking filters and fluids, greasing key components, and keeping the machine in proper working order.

Reliable equipment doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from consistent preparation.

Our crew is working through 40+ stump removals across The Brookwoods Golf Club in Quinton today.

Golf course work requires a little more coordination than most sites. Fairways remain active, turf conditions matter, and equipment movement has to be controlled so play can continue normally.

We worked closely with the superintendent to plan access routes and staging so the work could move across the course efficiently without disrupting golfers.

Grinding depth is also controlled carefully on golf course projects to allow proper turf restoration once the stumps are removed.

Clean ex*****on and leaving the course ready for the next step is always the goal.

Not every stump is straightforward.

On a recent project, two stumps required navigating a drainage ditch and limited access conditions. Rather than disturb the surrounding area or force the issue, we evaluated the site, developed a controlled access plan, and positioned our grinder safely to complete the work.

In the second photo, the grinder is operating nearly below grade inside the ditch. It took careful weight distribution, planning, and disciplined ex*****on to get there and finish cleanly.

Access challenges don't require drama. They require preparation.

We appreciate the opportunity to support fellow tree care professionals on projects that require a little extra thought and follow-through.

Commitment to Underground Utility Safety

We are proud to share that RW Stump Grinding owner, Reggie West, was recently appointed to the Virginia 811 Advisory Committee by the State Corporation Commission for a two-year term.

The advisory committee brings together representatives from utility companies, underground line locators, excavators, municipalities, VDOT, the Board for Contractors, and the Virginia 811 notification center. Their role is to improve underground utility safety and help prevent costly and dangerous damage during digging and excavation.

Reggie will be serving in one of the excavator seats, representing contractors who work in the field every day. His focus is on improving communication, safety practices, and accountability across the entire system.

What this means for our customers is simple. We take underground utility safety seriously. We follow the 811 process, we respect your property, and we operate at a higher professional standard.

Thank you for trusting RW Stump Grinding with your projects.

The Advantage of a Quieter Season

Winter has a reputation for being a “slow season,” but that label can be misleading.

From a scheduling standpoint, winter is often one of the most straightforward times of year to take care of lingering outdoor work. Fewer overlapping projects. Fewer last-minute changes driven by weather or growing cycles. And far less competition for space on the calendar.

In spring, everything arrives at once. Lawn repairs, landscaping installs, fence replacements, tree work. Good contractors fill up quickly, and small tasks can end up waiting behind larger, more urgent projects. Stump removal often falls into that category. It matters, but it rarely feels urgent until it’s suddenly in the way.

Winter removes much of that pressure. Access is typically easier, crews can work without navigating active landscaping, and scheduling tends to be more predictable. It’s not about rushing work through a quiet period. It’s about using the slower season to handle the things that complicate busier ones.

There’s also a planning advantage. Taking care of stumps now means spring projects can start without delays or adjustments. No redesigning plans around obstacles. No waiting for availability when demand spikes. Just a cleaner starting point when the weather turns.

Winter scheduling isn’t for everyone, and it doesn’t have to be. But for homeowners who value simplicity and predictability, it’s often the path of least resistance.

If you’re thinking ahead to spring and want fewer things competing for attention later, winter can be a practical time to get those details out of the way—quietly, efficiently, and without the rush.

Unfinished Business in the Yard

January has a way of exposing the things we meant to deal with last year.

That old stump near the driveway. The one half-hidden by leaves in the fall, snow in the winter. Easy to ignore when everything’s dormant. But it didn’t go anywhere when the calendar flipped.

A lot of homeowners assume stumps are a “spring problem.” In reality, they’re more like unfinished business. Below ground, the roots are still there. Decay continues slowly over winter. Insects and moisture don’t take the season off. And when spring arrives, that same stump often becomes the obstacle that delays lawn repair, landscaping, or new projects.

From a planning standpoint, winter is actually a useful time to reset. There’s no grass to damage, no growing beds to work around, and fewer moving pieces competing for attention. Removing a stump now can make spring work smoother—not faster in theory, but easier in practice.

Stump grinding doesn’t change the look of your yard overnight in January. There’s no dramatic “after” photo with bright green grass. What it does is eliminate a problem before it becomes a scheduling bottleneck later. One less thing to work around. One less hazard to remember. One less task carrying over year to year.

If you’re thinking about lawn repair, planting, or outdoor improvements once the weather warms up, winter can be a reasonable time to clear the slate—literally.

No rush. No urgency. Just something worth understanding before spring shows up and everything suddenly feels time-sensitive.
