Priming brick is necessary to protect the topcoat from chemical damage, moisture, and uneven absorption. Brick and mortar naturally contain free alkalis, which are chemical bases that can attack and destroy standard paint unless a specialty primer neutralizes them. Furthermore, priming creates a protective barrier against efflorescence, preventing those white, crusty mineral deposits from pushing through the masonry when moisture becomes trapped behind the wall. Finally, because brick is highly porous and acts like a sponge, a dedicated primer seals these microscopic pores so the expensive finish paint does not soak in unevenly or go to waste.
P.s. yes, I did paint the shutters as well. 😆
