Yes, I know there are nails in the wood. Cutting wood containing metal can be dangerous and can damage a blade, cause kickback, or send debris flying. I’m using an old blade that I’m willing to sacrifice, and I’m taking precautions based on the material, equipment, and situation. This isn’t something I recommend trying unless you understand the risks and know how to work around them safely.

Free wood is everywhere if you know where to look. I break down old pallets, pull the nails, clean up the boards, and turn what most people consider trash into usable lumber. It takes a little work, but you can’t beat the price.

Rebuilding these 138-year-old shutters means drilling a LOT of holes in exactly the right place. Instead of measuring and marking every single one, I made a simple jig that makes the process faster, easier, and repeatable.

These old shutters were too far gone to simply repair, so I’m rebuilding the frames while saving as much of the original material as possible. They’ve survived well over a century, so throwing them away wasn’t an option. One step closer to bringing these old shutters back to life!
