Another way to prevent the spread is to not trim or cut down oak trees during the summer months (or after leaves are fully mature in spring). This keeps the spread of any spores from becoming airborne and infecting other trees in the area.

Tubakia iowensis a fungus known to cause Bur Oak Blight, which is a leaf disease that attacks oak trees. Bur Oaks will become symptomatic in the summer months, displaying brown, wedge shaped blotches on its leaves. A part of the leaves will turn yellow and purple-brown lesions form along the veins of the lower leaf surface.

We get a lot of questions about specific trees. Besides ash trees, the major species we get asked about the most is oak, and the best time to care for an oak. Oak trees live a long time, but don't always look the nicest, depending on the species. Many oaks look like they are dying when it's their natural way of shedding and growing.

Here is a great guide from our wonderful Iowa State Extension Office on pruning oak trees followed by a video from the ISU on how to prune trees safely. The image comes from Perdue Extension and is a great example of what the ISU extension is describing in their article.
