Pro Tip Before Leaving for Spring Break 🌴

Don’t Leave for Vacation Without Knowing This About Your Water Shutoff Valve. πŸ’§

Shutting off your main water valve before vacation prevents catastrophic water damage from broken pipes, leaking appliances, or burst hoses by stopping the flow of water into the home. It eliminates the risk of continuous flooding from a failed toilet supply line or washing machine hose while you are away. 🚽

Prevents Catastrophic Damage: Without water pressure in the lines, small leaks cannot turn into flooded homes that cause warped flooring, damaged drywall, and mold. 🏚

Saves Costs: It helps avoid massive insurance claims and expensive cleanup costs from water damage. πŸ’²πŸ’²πŸ’²

Peace of Mind: It guarantees that even if a plumbing failure occurs, the damage will be confined to only the water already in the pipes. 😎

Many people welcome the crisp, cold winter weather, but nobody welcomes pipe-related headaches that can come with the dropping temperatures. But you can prevent your pipes from freezing or bursting by taking the following steps.

It's not the one day of cold weather that causes issues.
However the multiple overcast days of barely getting above freezing temperatures

Let Faucets Drip.
Keep faucets running at a slow drip. Preferably at the furthest point from where the water enters the dwelling.

Open Cabinet Doors.
Open cabinet doors to allow heated air to circulate around plumbing pipes and keep them warm. Especially on exterior walls.

Cover Outdoor Hose Faucets.
You can buy outdoor faucet covers or make your own.
All you are trying to do is insulate the spigot and protect from the wind chill.

Disconnect Outdoor Hoses.
Disconnect hoses from outdoor faucets to prevent water from freezing and expanding.

Winterize Your Irrigation System
Most irrigation systems will have a separate shut off valve. Shut the water supply valve off and drain the system if possible.

Keep Garage Doors Closed.
Keep garage doors closed to prevent pipes from freezing, especially if water supply lines run through the garage.

Find Shut Off Valves.
Find and label your main shut-off valve, which is usually located in your basement, garage or crawl space.
You can also turn your water off at the water meter.

Pay attention to unheated areas.
Pipes in unheated areas like your attic and basement are at a higher risk of freezing.
