❄️ Are your pipes ready for a Western New York winter?

Pipes in basements, crawl spaces, garages, exterior walls, and other unheated areas are especially vulnerable to freezing.

Before temperatures drop:

🔧 Insulate exposed water lines
🚪 Seal drafts around doors, windows, and pipe openings
🌡️ Keep your home heated consistently
💧 Know where your main water shutoff valve is located

If a pipe freezes, do not use an open flame to thaw it. Contact a plumbing professional for help.

Prepare now and protect your home from winter water damage

🏠 Lewiston homeowners: Has sewage ever backed up into your basement?

The Town of Lewiston has a backflow preventer reimbursement program that may cover up to $2,500 of the cost of installing a sewer backwater valve for eligible property owners.

A backwater valve can help reduce the risk of sewage flowing back into your home during a sewer backup. If you’re considering one, take these steps before scheduling installation:

1️⃣ Call the Town of Lewiston Water Pollution Control Center at 716-754-8291 to confirm current eligibility, available funding, and installation requirements.

2️⃣ Contact Kevin’s Plumbing & Heating Inc. to discuss your sewer line and request an installation estimate. 716-868-9818 or 716-868-9819

Reimbursement is determined by the Town of Lewiston and is not guaranteed. Ask the town about its inspection and paperwork requirements before work begins.

🍂 Winter will be here before we know it!

Before freezing temperatures arrive, remember to disconnect all garden hoses from your outdoor faucets. A connected hose can trap water inside the faucet and pipe, increasing the risk of freezing, cracking, and costly water damage.

✅ Disconnect and drain hoses
✅ Shut off interior valves to outdoor faucets, if available
✅ Drain the exterior faucet
✅ Install an insulated faucet cover

A few minutes of preparation now could prevent a major plumbing problem this winter.

🌿 Don’t Forget About Your Outdoor Faucets

Outdoor plumbing gets plenty of use during a Western New York summer. Take a moment to check around your hose connections and exterior faucets.

Watch for:

💧 Dripping after the faucet is turned off
💧 Water leaking near the wall
💧 Loose or damaged connections
💧 Unexplained damp areas near the foundation
💧 Reduced water pressure

A small outdoor leak can waste water and may allow moisture into places you can’t easily see.

🌧️ Heavy Rain Can Mean Big Problems for Your Basement 🌧️

The recent heavy rains have caused sewer systems to become overwhelmed, leaving many homeowners dealing with sewage backing up into their basements.

A properly installed backwater valve helps protect your home by preventing sewage from flowing backward through your sewer line. When the municipal sewer system becomes overloaded, the valve automatically closes—helping stop contaminated wastewater from entering your basement.

If your home does not have a backwater valve, or you are unsure whether your current valve is working properly, Kevin’s Plumbing & Heating can inspect your system and discuss your options.

Protect your basement before the next heavy storm!

🛠️ Planning a Kitchen, Bathroom or Laundry-Room Renovation?

The location and condition of your plumbing can affect the cost and layout of your entire project.

Before ordering cabinets, fixtures or appliances, consider:

✅ Where the existing water and drain lines are located
✅ Whether pipes need to be moved
✅ Fixture spacing and access
✅ Shutoff-valve placement
✅ Whether the existing plumbing can support the new design

Getting plumbing input early can help prevent expensive changes after construction begins.
