After more than three decades of dedicated service, Don Balbaugh is officially retiring from ownership of Northern Drilling, Inc.

Don’s journey with Northern Drilling began in the mid 80's; and in November 1989, he and his two partners, John Kashuba and Joe Antkoviak, signed the documents that established Northern Drilling, Inc. Since 2005, Don has been the company’s sole owner, while continuing to work hands-on as a well driller and well repairman, as well as handling all the facility and equipment needs.

Throughout the years, Don has built much more than a business—he has built relationships, earned the trust of generations of customers, and dedicated himself to serving the people of our community and surrounding areas, including Bois Blanc Island.

For Don, the mission was always simple “bring water to your home or business and make sure your needs were taken care of”. Providing reliable water service was never just a job—it was a priority and a commitment to the communities he proudly served.

While Don is retiring from the business ownership, we are pleased to announce that he will remain the face of Northern Drilling, Inc. as Vice President of Operations. His experience, knowledge, and dedication will continue to be an important part of the company for years to come.

Don is incredibly honored and proud that the legacy he helped build will continue in the hands of Matt and Christina (Balbaugh) Morton, who are committed to carrying Northern Drilling, Inc. forward with the same dedication of quality service to the communities that have been its foundation for more than three decades.

We are also proud to acknowledge that the team who worked alongside Don for many years will remain intact and continue to support the goals and mission of Northern Drilling, Inc. We are incredibly grateful for their knowledge, experience, skills, and dedication, all of which will play a vital role in the continued growth and success of the company.

Please join us in congratulating Don on his semi-retirement from business ownership and celebrating his many years of dedicated service to Northern Drilling, Inc., our community, and the surrounding areas.

Many thanks to Ryan and Jason from Plaunt Transportation for rescuing and towing me back to Cheboygan County Marina when they realized I was in distress in the middle of Lake Huron!

In the middle of Lake Huron my boat lost all power and before I could even analyze and react to the entire situation my phone rang and Ryan was on the other end
asking if I was okay. I relayed that I had lost all power on the boat and the Plaunts team immediately went into full rescue mode!

Impressively they landed me safely at the Cheboygan County Marina boat launch where I was able to dock the boat and load it on my trailer. I’m currently repairing the boat and will be back on the water soon!

Thanks Ryan and Jason for your acute awareness of my dangerous situation and your rescue. I’m thankful for your help and support!
