A lot can change in almost 60 years.

What you’re known for shouldn’t.

Fulmer started in 1968.

James Fulmer built the company from the ground up.

The next generation pushed it further into commercial work.

Other leaders carried it through different seasons.

Then in 2016, Andrew Faw took full ownership.

Since then, the company has grown.

But the part we care about most hasn’t changed.

When someone sees Fulmer Concrete on a job site in Chattanooga, we want that name to mean something.

That we’ll show up.

That we’ll do what we said we were going to do.

That we’ll take care of the people we work with.

That we’ll stand behind the work.

Anyone can grow revenue.

Keeping a good name for almost 60 years is the harder part.

We’ll do a $10 million concrete project.

We’ll also do a $10,000 one.

We’ve got a handful of GCs here in Chattanooga that we’ve worked with for years.

If they need us on the big project, we’re there.

If they need us to handle something small, we’re there too.

The dollar amount isn’t really the point.

The relationship is.

We’ve never wanted to become the contractor that gets too big to answer the phone unless there are enough zeros attached to the job.

If you’re one of our main clients, we’re going to do what you need.

Simple as that.

Some projects mean a little more.

We’re working with on the new Grace Baptist academic buildings and worship center after the previous facilities were demolished by a tornado.

The project includes multiple new academic buildings, the worship center, site concrete, and a lot of work happening across a pretty large footprint.

We’re proud to be part of it and proud of the progress our crews have made! 👏

About 70% of our work is negotiated.

People hear that number and assume one thing:

“We must be the cheapest.”

That’s almost never why negotiated work happens.

Negotiated work comes after years of proving yourself.

It comes after finishing projects without callbacks.

After answering the phone.

After standing behind your work.

After showing up when you say you will.

After solving problems instead of creating them.

That’s the power of reputation.

It isn’t built in one project.

It’s built in hundreds of small decisions over decades.

That’s why we’ll always choose protecting our reputation over chasing another job.

The jobs come because of the reputation - not the other way around.

Another one wrapped up. 👊

We recently completed the concrete scope for the new 60k sf Ben Parker Fabrication industrial building alongside J & J Contractors.

Our work included the building slab as well as the surrounding site concrete.

Solid project from start to finish.

If a customer wants us to sacrifice quality to hit an unrealistic schedule

We're probably not the right contractor.

We've walked away from work because of that.

Concrete is permanent.

People remember bad work a lot longer than they remember an aggressive schedule.

We've built Fulmer by saying yes to the right projects.

That also means being willing to say no to the wrong ones.

A 90k sf hotel means doing the same thing over and over.

And getting it right every single time.

We’re working on the new Courtyard Marriott here in Chattanooga, a 90k sf hotel with elevated concrete metal decks on every floor.

Each elevated deck requires its own planning, access, pump setup, placement, finishing, and coordination with everything happening below and around it.

The farther the building gets out of the ground, the less room there is for mistakes.

Once you find good people, can you keep them?

We spend a lot more time thinking about retention than turnover.

We don't expect people to spend their careers living out of hotels.

We don't believe every weekend should belong to the job site.

Construction is demanding enough.

If someone gives us their best Monday through Friday,

we want them to have a life outside of work too.

Has that philosophy cost us projects?

Probably.

Has it helped us build long term teams?

Absolutely.

We don't just want people to come work here.

We want them to build a career here.

It's not the destination that counts.

It's the journey.

We’re working with on a 20k SF addition to an existing hangar here in the Chattanooga area.

The photos show pretty much the whole progression:

- Subgrade
- Stone
- V***r barrier
- Reinforcement
- Placement
- Finishing
- Final slab

On a slab this size, especially in a facility built around aircraft maintenance, the details matter.

Grades have to be right.

Drainage has to be right.

Slab flatness has to be right.

And once it’s poured, you don’t get many second chances.

That’s why we spend so much time on everything that happens before the concrete trucks ever show up.
