As a garden designer, I have high expectations for my own yard, but balancing a business and family leaves me with limited time for maintenance. Because of this, I rely on low-maintenance garden staples.

One of my favorites is Euphorbia, particularly the darker cultivar ‘Miner’s Merlot.’ Its evergreen/semi-evergreen foliage provides excellent contrast in a sea of green. It thrives best in full sun and well-drained soil.

Miner’s Merlot Spurge (Euphorbia ‘KM-MM024’)

- Light: Full sun to partial sun
- Water: Drought tolerant once established
- Size: 18 to 24 inches tall and wide

Add height and year-round interest to your garden. Simply place a few drought-tolerant succulents in a birdbath, and voilà—you have living art! It is both beautiful and functional.

Despite the extreme heat and humidity that causes most plants to struggle, Gaura continues to look great. Thanks to its deep taproot system, it remains a reliable choice for the garden. It is one of my favorite perennials and will bloom repeatedly if cut back after the initial bloom.

Pictured here tucked between my deck and patio is the Siskiyou Pink variety, which is adored by both pollinators and spectators.

Yesterday I discovered Hugh’s Farmers Market & Garden Center in Hixson. It has a delicious assortment of local grown produce, a hefty perennial plant selection and gorgeous plant containers. I will come back with the larger car!

I love working with repeat clients. Last fall, we did a complete overhaul of this client’s backyard, and this summer, we focused on the front and sides of the property.

Since this is a corner lot, there was a utility mound in the front yard that distracted the eye from the house. Our design focused on drawing attention back to the home. We used evergreen trees, shrubs, and perennials, with crabapple trees and Emperor 1 Japanese maples as our feature pieces to provide balance.

I love how instant the transformation was, and the clients were ecstatic about the results.

Highlighting our amazing partners - did fantastic work on the pool and new pavilion. The Belgard paver pool deck was the perfect fit with the mountain builders and steps. The planting added just the right touch.

My first encounter with Andrew Carson’s kinetic sculptors in Seattle while visiting my sister was truly awe-inspiring, leaving me speechless at the exceptional artistry and movement of the pieces. Now, almost 20 years later, one of his sculpture takes pride of place in this stunning Royal Harbour property, a testament to how life’s journey can come full circle in the most remarkable ways.
