We Built That: 10th & Grady Church | Charlottesville, VA

More than a century ago, Charlottesville’s Trinity Episcopal congregation first worshiped together at 10th & Grady. Their original church had been torn down to make way for the segregated school. During the shutdown, the congregation organized classes in this building. It’s one of the places where Charlottesville’s Black history still stands, and we were honored to help preserve it.

Superintendent Mike Woodson and our crew restored the church and the small fellowship building behind it:

🔨 Replaced damaged siding and repainted the exterior in its original colors
🔨 New paint and finishes throughout the interior
🔨 Brought the western wall back to plumb. It was about 4½" out, and with an engineered fix we straightened it without moving the roof.
🔨 Kept the original craftsmanship wherever we could, down to the old nails that are a lot tougher to pull than anything made today

“I love these buildings,” Mike says. “There’s a long, long history here.”

Thanks to C-ville Weekly for the history behind this one.

At Martin Horn, our people are our foundation.

Today we hosted our company-wide Wellness Day, bringing the entire staff together to focus on three pillars of well-being: mental health, physical health, and financial wellness.

Investing in the well-being of our crew isn't a one-day effort, but days like this are a great reminder of why it matters. 💪

We Built That: Quirk Hotel Charlottesville 🏨

In historic downtown Charlottesville, the Quirk Hotel puts clean, modern design right next to some of the city's oldest architecture, and fills the space with work by local artists.

Over 27 months, our team built an 81,000 SF boutique hotel with:
• 80 guest rooms
• Two restaurants, including The Pink Grouse
• A lobby bar with alternating archways
• A rooftop bar looking out at the Blue Ridge Mountains
• A two-level art gallery, coffee shop, wh***ey lounge, fitness area and outdoor lawn

The project started in March 2018 and finished in 2020, carrying the team through the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Credit goes to Project Manager Josh Horton, Superintendents Tim Patronik and Lance Sowder, and Estimators Doug Horn and Arthur Rogers for getting it to the finish line.

Thank you to The Quirk Hotel, Bank Street Advisors and ARCHITECTUREFIRM for trusting us with this project. Thank you to TrueLook Construction Cameras ameras for capturing this.

Making an entrance.

The corridor at the VIA Centers for Neurodevelopment is coming together, and these angular navy portals are a sign of what's ahead: a space designed with purpose for the students and families VIA serves.

Stay tuned for more progress!

At Martin Horn, we love seeing our team have fun off the job too!

Shoutout to Bobby Bryant, who showed up and showed out at the Augusta County Co****le Super Regional Blind Draw. Same precision, same competitive drive, just a different kind of job site. 😄

Congratulations, Bobby!
