One of our favorite special projects: The University of Virginia’s Historic Key Alley!

The Addastone Resin Bonded Surfacing System provides an attractive, hard wearing and low maintenance surface by bonding or fixing loose gravel aggregates to concrete, asphalt, wood, or metal.

S.L. Williamson Co.’s Alleyways Renovation Project on the historic UVA campus used a 1-3mm Brittany Bronze stone and a buff resin.

Our first step was to pave the alleyways, then careful timing came into play - freshly laid asphalt must be allowed to cure for 90 days. When ready, Addastone was installed by first sealing the base asphalt with an Addacryl sealer which seeps into the asphalt and seals it from moisture. Once that process cured, the Addastone resin was mixed, placed into the areas, and carefully spread out by hand. The stone, which is specifically processed for a resin paving application, was then placed in the uncured resin. After the aggregate was placed and the resin cured, a post installation sweeping (by hand with soft hand brooms) of excess surface aggregate was required. This removed aggregate that was not successfully captured by the resin as it hardened.

Each year, more than 100 million tons of asphalt pavement are reclaimed and recycled. Nearly 75 million tons of this reclaimed asphalt pavement are combined with new materials and mixed into new asphalt pavement!

• Recycled asphalt reduces the quarrying, mining, and oil consumption required to create new asphalt.

• The quality offered by ground, compacted recycled asphalt product is invaluable as a base foundation.

• Through the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement, less reclaimed asphalt is winding up in landfills. We stay on top of the latest technology to advance the percentage of asphalt that can be recycled, further reducing negative environmental impact.

S.L. Williamson Company is a third-generation asphalt paving and road construction company! We take great pride in our work and have many second and third-generation employees that share the same work ethic and attention to detail. The nature and scope of our work varies from residential to commercial, from pothole patching to heavy highway work.

We produce plant mix asphalt in three asphalt plants located in Central Virginia near Charlottesville. We install plant mix asphalt under contract on public, commercial, and private projects with VDOT, UVA, the City of Charlottesville and other municipalities, as well as with contractors, various corporate entities, and individuals. We also sell plant mix to VDOT, municipalities, other contractors, and individuals.
