THE HIGHLIGHTS:
- transformed mid-century cottage for growing family
- adapted historic front rooms with small tweaks: increased ceiling heights & glass filled spaces with natural light, rooms found new life in new functions (goodbye old dining room, hello new private office!)
- expanded footprint to add kitchen at the heart of the home opening onto a family room and added an upper level with a light-filled stair, bedrooms, & loft
- graceful alignments with arches & barrel vaults create seamless transitions between formal / public & informal / private spaces (hello cozy bar!)
- thoughtfully designed porches create distinct entry sequences & plan relationships for formal entry, driveway entry, & outdoor entertaining / views

TONS OF NATURAL LIGHT *AND* PRIVACY?
- The need for more natural light while maintaining privacy from surrounding lots and streets can feel like opposing forces; in this project they compliment each other with skillfully designed public / private thresholds, choreographed paths, and thoughtful sightlines & alignments.
- Light: Oversized windows were added to the front of the home in the dining room (adapted from the historic sitting room), soaring 11’ tall windows in the new staircase flood the home with natural light, and in the new primary suite floor to ceiling windows orient to the porches and outdoor living spaces… all out of sight of neighboring lots and streets .
- Privacy: The concept of ‘prospect & refuge’ (we will do a deep dive into this concept later!) is used in a front entry addition to choreograph the entry sequence, allowing for comfort and privacy while also slowing down the cadence of entering the home in a contextual cottage language.
