- The Mayor of Myers Park -
THE HIGHLIGHTS:
- recipient of the 2026 Preservation Award from the Charlotte Museum of History
- built in 1916 for Myers Park’s first mayor, this home stands as one of the neighborhood’s founding cornerstones; a structure that has been lovingly cared for over 100 years and has watched the City of Charlotte grow up around it
- the homeowners approached the project with reverence for the integrity of the historic home, balanced with the need for updates: a rear entrance that works, a kitchen with room to breathe, and a primary suite upstairs
- preservationists at heart, they aimed to protect the historically significant spaces: the formal front elevation, the side porches, the front interior rooms, and the historic bedrooms
THE MODIFICATIONS FOR MODERN LIVING:
- the historic rear entrance - originally built for household staff - dropped visitors into the basement stair landing: a cramped, awkward welcome for what had quietly become the home’s busiest entrance
- a generous rear addition takes cues from the historic side porch details; upstairs holds a new primary suite with a spacious ensuite bath and closets, and downstairs, a new kitchen and laundry room
- the historic kitchen found new life as a relaxed family room, while the historic butler’s pantry was split into two charming spaces: a wet bar serving the formal dining room to one side and a half bath perfectly suited for pool guests to the other side
THE PRESERVED ELEMENTS:
- the historic bedrooms are restored to their original, formal beauty
- the historic secondary stairs are preserved gracefully in the new addition
- salvaged materials were restored, reused, and repurposed throughout: doors & door hardware, brick, trellis tails, and slate roof tiles all live on in the next chapters of the home’s story
As a home tied so closely to the founding of Myers Park, this house carries real significance for the City of Charlotte - and this renovation was approached with the integrity and thoughtful, patient care that history deserves.
