Raymond Huggins has been with A&K for 18 years, and his path through this company tells you a lot about how we think about our people.

He started as a foreman, moved to assistant superintendent, and now runs a role we call Field Resource Manager. Think of it as HR for the field. Raymond is responsible for recruiting, developing, and supporting the right people in the right positions across our field teams. He focuses on building strong field teams and identifying future leaders. He makes sure our field team members have the tools and room to grow. And because he's bilingual, he can do that work with more of our field team.

We created this role to give our field teams a dedicated advocate. To show that we value the people on the job sites just as much as the folks who balance the books. It's that kind of mutual respect that keeps someone like Raymond around for nearly two decades.

Keep up the great work, Raymond!

Painting an active manufacturing facility takes a massive amount of coordination.

You can't just show up, set up equipment, and get to work. Production schedules still need to be met. Employees still need to move safely through the facility. Operations still need to keep running.

That means surface preparation, containment, PPE requirements, access to work areas, and project scheduling all have to be coordinated around the people who keep the facility moving.

The goal is to complete the painting safely while minimizing disruptions to the operation.

It’s what separates industrial painting from many other types of projects. A lot of the work happens before the first gallon of paint is opened.

This May was the first time A&K hosted Clays for a Cause.

And the inspiration for the event was to get people on a range, raise some money, and put it toward something meaningful. That something was Buckets of Love, a program A&K has run for several years now. Our team gets together, fills buckets with school supplies, and gets them into the hands of teachers in underserved schools around Charlotte.

This year's shoot funded this year's buckets.

Buckets made their way to schools and students in Clover, York, Rock Hill, and Gastonia, plus a special partnership with Classroom Central, our biggest drop-off this year. In York School District One alone, that meant 50 student buckets and 10 teacher buckets to help students and educators start the year strong. Schools like Lingerfeldt Elementary, Hickory Grove-Sharon Elementary, and Richmond Drive Elementary, a school A&K has had the privilege of supporting year after year, welcomed our team with open arms, and their teachers and staff let us know just how much it meant.

A&K lives and works in Charlotte. That's why we keep showing up for our community, year after year.

We want to thank everyone who came out for the inaugural shoot, and thank our team, who were instrumental in getting the buckets ready for these incredible teachers.

We celebrated National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day at A&K.

The team gathered for a quick break to enjoy some cookies and a little time together.

And there was a competition again this year. Last year, Clarette Santiago took home the win. This year's winner is Gray Riley, who now holds the bragging rights. Sorry, Clarette!

Richard Ho and Dave Shively also got to drop off cookies with some of our clients.

It was a day with good cookies and good people.

Corrosion usually shows up after the damage is already done. And here’s how it happens:

It starts as a hairline break in a coating on a piece of process equipment. Moisture gets in. Then the chemicals follow. The damage compounds faster than anyone expected, and by the time it's visible enough to flag, it’s going to cost a lot more to repair.

That's why a properly applied coating system acts as a barrier between the base metal and everything working against it: humidity, chemical exposure, temperature swings, and the daily stresses of an active facility. When that barrier holds, the equipment underneath holds with it.

Facilities that keep up with their coating cycles are less likely to face emergency shutdowns because of corrosion.

Here’s a closer look at how protective coatings work and how they help prevent bigger operational problems: https://akpainting.com/painting-industrial-equipment/

Tape or paint?

Facility managers often reach for tape because it's fast and easy to apply. That makes sense in some situations. But in high-traffic areas, tape is harder to sustain. It starts to fail under heavy use. Then you're reapplying it again and again, doing more work sooner than you expected.

Painted lines hold up better under heavy traffic use. The tradeoff is that paint takes more planning upfront, so you're working around your operations rather than putting something down when it's convenient.

The right call depends on what your floor actually goes through every day. Low-traffic areas with frequent layout changes may be a good fit for tape. High-traffic production areas are usually better served by paint, even if the upfront cost is higher.

If you're weighing the two options for your facility, A&K put together a side-by-side comparison here: https://akpainting.com/retape-or-repaint-the-best-option-when-you-need-to-save-time/

The people behind the paint make everything possible.

Step onto the factory floor, and you’ll find our painters on lifts, behind sprayers, and on scaffolding. It’s an environment few people ever see, but it’s where our crews show up early, work through any conditions, and keep projects moving.

Because this work is intensely physical. It requires attention to detail and a level of skill that often goes unnoticed by anyone outside the trade.

Our painters at A&K Painting are the reason the work gets done. They’re the ones in the field every day putting in the hours and doing the job right.

They deserve the credit. Thank you!

By the time a tank looks like it needs repainting, the damage has usually already spread.

The early signs aren't big. You might notice chalking on the surface, that powdery residue that wipes off on your hand. You might see small blisters forming in the coating. Those are easy to overlook when nothing is visibly flaking yet.

Blisters are often where moisture has already gotten underneath. And once water finds its way between the coating and the steel, corrosion spreads in ways you can't see from the outside. What looks like a straightforward repaint turns into a much larger job once you're up close.

Catching it early is the difference between a planned maintenance call and a repair.

If you manage a facility with industrial tanks, we put together a full breakdown on what to look for: https://akpainting.com/how-often-to-repaint-industrial-tanks/

Every contractor says they're a family. It's worth asking what that actually means.

For most companies, it usually means a cookout in the summer and a bonus at Christmas, and that's fine. But when someone on the team is going through something hard (a health scare, a rough stretch at home, a few weeks where they're just not okay) that's when you find out if the word “family” means anything.

The way A&K operates, you don't wait for someone to ask. If something's off, you notice. You check in. You figure out what that person needs, and you do what you can. Sometimes that's flexibility on the schedule. Sometimes it's just making sure they know someone's paying attention.

The same goes when things are going well. Years on the crew are recognized. Someone who stepped up on a tough project is acknowledged. Those moments don't go unnoticed here, not because it's written into any policy, but because that's how the people leading this company choose to operate.

The contractor you hire for your warehouse says a lot about how seriously you take the facility.

Most painting contractors can handle a straightforward commercial project. Warehouses are a different environment. Forklift traffic, chemical exposure, active operations, and concrete floors that take real abuse every day all require a contractor who knows how to specify and apply coatings that hold up under those conditions.

There are a few things you should know before hiring anyone. Surface prep is where most coating failures start, not the product itself. Scheduling matters in an active facility because sequencing work around live operations is a different challenge than painting an empty building. And coating system selection has to match your specific environment.

We broke down what to look for and the right questions to ask: https://akpainting.com/best-warehouse-painting-contractors/
