9 members of our team spent a day volunteering at Crisis Assistance Ministry recently.

Crisis Assistance Ministry is a Charlotte-based nonprofit that helps families facing financial hardship cover rent, utilities, and basic needs. They've been serving this community for decades. The people they serve don't have a lot of margin for things to go wrong, and the organization runs on volunteers showing up. That’s why we make an intentional effort to help whenever we can.

It's easy to stay heads-down in the work. Projects stack up, schedules get tight, and before long, weeks go by without looking up. A&K Cares exists because we want a real reason to look up.

The foreman is one of the most important leaders on a jobsite that most people never notice.

They catch when a detail's off before it becomes a half-day problem. They pull a team member aside before a small tension becomes a bigger one. They keep the pace going even when the schedule starts to drift. None of that impact shows up in a project summary or a daily report.

There's no line item for "kept things from falling apart on a Tuesday." But every GC who's worked with a good foreman knows exactly what that's worth.

A floor marking that fades or peels stops doing its job entirely.

And in a warehouse or industrial facility, repainting around active operations isn’t cheap or convenient. The coating itself is just as important as its design. Floor markings guide traffic, identify walkways, separate equipment zones, and flag areas that need some extra attention. They help people move safely through a space where equipment and foot traffic share the same space.

But none of that works if the paint fails. Not every floor coating holds up to heavy traffic, chemical exposure, or the daily wear that comes with industrial use. The right product, applied correctly, makes a world of difference between a marking that lasts and one that becomes a liability.

Two new faces joined A&K Painting recently, and both of them know the industry well.

Braxton Tooke is coming on as a Project Manager on our New Construction side. He previously worked with Sherwin-Williams through its MTP program and spent two years with another commercial subcontractor.

Caleb Hart is stepping into Business Development with eight years of sales experience in the painting industry. He already understands the work, the current market, and how the industry operates.

Bringing in people with that kind of experience means they can hit the ground running and focus on helping A&K grow.

Every data center audit checks power and cooling, but almost none of them check the floor.

Facility managers spend a lot of time on cooling systems and power redundancy, and for good reason. But the floor coating is often overlooked, even though it's doing more work than any other surface in the building. The right coating controls static discharge, keeps concrete dust from circulating through the air, and holds up against chemical exposure from cleaning and maintenance cycles.

Static builds on an uncoated or degrading concrete floor without any obvious signs. Then it discharges into sensitive equipment, and whatever fails next gets blamed on the equipment itself. A proper floor coating stops the charge before it forms, and it costs a lot less than replacing what it protects.

Hickory Grove Shopping Center project is wrapped up.

We worked with New South Properties on a full exterior refresh: pressure wash, prep, spot prime, and paint the metal roofing, façade panels, coping, brick columns, and decorative metal across the standalone façades. The split-face walls on the Why Not Pizza side and along the Family Dollar and Food Lion frontage got a refresh, too.

Shopping centers have surfaces that face the public every day. Getting the prep work right on metal and masonry before a single coat is applied produces a finish that holds up for years to come.

25 years later, September 11 still stops us in our tracks.

Nearly 3,000 people went to work that morning and didn't come home. Firefighters, paramedics, and police officers ran into buildings that everyone else was running out of. Many of them didn't make it out.

The anniversary can affect everyone differently, depending on where you were, how old you were, what you lost. But most people who were alive that day remember exactly where they were when they heard what was happening.

Today, we're thinking about the families who are still carrying that loss, the first responders who made it out but came home changed, and the ones who gave everything.

We won't forget them.

Commercial and industrial painting isn't always a comfortable job. The hours are long, the conditions range from freezing cold to triple-digit heat, and the margin for getting it right is thin. The people doing this work every day know that.

So that’s what this weekend is all about. The field teams who show up early, stay late, and spend their days on scaffolding, in lifts, and in hard-to-reach spaces. The ones who take real ownership of the quality of their work, down to the last detail.

Fall is the best window for exterior commercial painting, and some property managers can miss that chance.

Cooler temperatures provide the conditions for paint to adhere and cure properly. Summer heat can cause paint to dry too fast and blister. Winter cold can prevent it from curing at all. Fall sits right in the middle, which is why work done now tends to hold up better.

Contractor availability is also stronger in fall than in spring or summer. Project schedules aren't as packed, which means better access to field teams, tighter timelines, and more flexibility on start dates.

There's also a practical reason to act before winter: bare or deteriorating surfaces let moisture in. Once water gets behind a surface and freezes, you're dealing with more than a paint project. Catching it in fall cuts that risk off before it compounds.
