Design and Art Aren't the Same

You can be a designer without being an artist. Design is a way of thinking, and it may be one of the most useful skills we can teach.

This clip makes the case for teaching design in elementary, middle and high school. Structure, balance, harmony and relationships are frameworks that apply far beyond aesthetics. They make learning new tools like AI easier and help organizations solve problems within real constraints.

Busyness Is Not Progress

Packed calendars and back to back meetings can look like productivity. But when the quarter ends and nothing tangible has changed, the busyness isn't working.

In this clip, the conversation challenges teams to think about what they are busy doing and whether it leads to something bigger. It also explores why workplace design matters: we spend a large part of our waking lives in an office, so the space should support meaningful work.

Same footprint. Whole new first impression. ⛳

At Pine Lake Country Club in Mint Hill, NC, we transformed a tired, utilitarian cart barn and pro shop into a building worthy of the club’s arrival experience.

We kept the original masonry knee walls, rebuilt everything above them, and topped it with a new gable roof and cupola. Upstairs, a 1,600 SF pro shop. Downstairs, a reorganized cart barn with EV charging, new lighting and better ventilation.

Great Design Starts With Observation

Some of the biggest slowdowns at work look small from the outside. Like logging in and out of multiple systems with 15 different passwords while customers wait on the line.

Dani Chesson sat with a contact center team, watched what they did and asked about their challenges. The result was one simple redesign that brought those passwords together and showed how much more each person could accomplish. In this episode, she and Jack talk about designing change around the people who live it.

Think Like a Beginner

The people who had been in the industry the longest weren't asking the questions. The newcomer was.

Dani Chesson started in banking in 2006, right as web and mobile banking were taking off. Moving between tech teams and branches, she asked about everything, and those questions began to unlock what was holding the organization back. In this episode, she and Jack Ossa explore how a beginner's perspective reveals the friction that change really depends on.

In this episode, Dani Chesson shares how design thinking can help leaders approach transformation through context, observation, and human experience. She and Jack Ossa discuss technology adoption, the limits of busyness, and why AI should support research and pattern recognition without replacing critical thinking.
