Mushrooms came up after the rain and you're wondering what's wrong with the grass.

Usually nothing. They're feeding on something dead underneath your lawn, normally old wood: a stump that was ground down but never dug out, roots left after a tree came down, or timber buried when the house was built. Wood like that takes years to break down, which is why they come back to the same patch every wet spell.

Most of them will disappear on their own once things dry out. The one worth a closer look is a ring or an arc of mushrooms with grass that's thinning, browning or dying around it. That can be a fairy ring, and it's worth having someone look before you treat it.

On fungicide: for a normal scatter after rain it usually isn't needed, because spraying doesn't touch the old wood underneath that's feeding them. It does have a place with fairy ring, and it's part of our annual turf management program.

One more thing. If you've got children or a dog that might eat them, pick them up and throw them away. If you think one has been eaten, call Poison Control or your vet right away.

Most lawn mushrooms feed on buried wood rather than the grass. Why they return to the same spot each year, and the fairy ring type worth treating.

It's the question we get asked most, and it deserves a straight answer.
Keep dogs and children off the lawn until a liquid application has dried. How long that takes is not a fixed number. It depends on the weather, the site, and what was actually applied, so go by the product label and the instructions we give you for that day's service.
Granular products are different again, and not every granular product carries the same instructions. Some need watering in first. Same rule: follow what came with the product that went down on your lawn.
One thing worth telling us in advance. If you have a pond or a water feature, let us know before we treat so we can follow the label and protect the area properly.
The full write-up covers how to prepare, what to expect on the day, and why the instructions change from one application to the next.

Stay off until the lawn has dried. How long that takes depends on the product and the weather, so follow the instructions given on the day of the visit.

There's a simple rule for leaves and it takes about ten seconds.

Mow, then look down. If you can still see grass, you're finished. The shredded leaf drops between the blades and breaks down into organic matter, which a lot of Charlotte-area clay soil could use more of.

If you can see a layer of leaf pieces sitting on top instead, there were too many and the rest has to come off.

Worth knowing if you're bagging them: City of Charlotte yard waste pickup needs paper bags or approved containers. Plastic bags aren't accepted.

And if you overseeded in September, be stricter. Heavy, matted leaves can smother new seedlings. How much damage they do depends on how many there are, how wet they get, and how long they sit there.

Full rundown here:

A thin scatter of leaves can be mowed in and adds organic matter to the soil. A layer that hides the grass has to come off. Plus the Charlotte paper bag rule.

You can lose a whole fall renovation in three dry days.

The aeration and the seed are the easy part. What decides whether you get a thick lawn by spring is what happens in the two weeks after the seed goes down.

New seed needs the top quarter inch of soil damp at all times. That means light watering two to four times a day, not the deep soak you would give an established lawn. A seed that starts to germinate and then dries out is finished. It doesn't pause and pick up later.

Once the seedlings are up you flip it. Less often, longer each time, so the roots chase the water down.

We wrote the whole routine out, including how to work out what your sprinkler actually puts down in fifteen minutes.

One inch a week in deep soakings for an established lawn, the opposite for new seed. Charlotte watering routines for both, and the timing that stops brown patch.

Fescue lawns in Charlotte get one real window a year, and it's about to open.

Core aeration pulls plugs out of the ground so air, water and seed can reach the root zone. On Piedmont clay that matters more than most people expect. Clay packs down hard over a hot summer, and seed scattered on top of compacted soil mostly feeds the birds.

Overseeding straight after aeration is what turns a thin fescue lawn into a thick one by spring.

The window runs September into October. It's set by soil temperature, not by the calendar.

Bermuda and zoysia don't get overseeded in fall, so if you're not sure what you've got, ask before you buy seed.

If your fescue thinned out in the July heat, get on the schedule now.

One week your backyard feels fine. The next, you can’t sit outside without getting swarmed.

That’s mosquito season in Charlotte, especially after a dry stretch followed by rain. Warm weather, humidity, shaded landscaping, and small areas of standing water can help mosquito populations build quickly.

If you’ve been thinking about mosquito control for this summer, this is the week to act.

We just posted a new blog explaining why mosquitoes often become more active after rain and what Charlotte-area homeowners should be watching for right now.

Rain came back, but your lawn is not automatically recovered.

Charlotte lawns have been under real drought stress, and a few storms do not rebuild weak roots, fix compacted soil, or close up thin areas overnight.

In many cases, color returns before the lawn is truly healthy underneath.

That thin turf can open the door for w**ds, disease pressure, mosquito activity, and additional summer stress.

We put together a breakdown of what Charlotte homeowners need to know right now and how to think about lawn recovery after drought conditions.

That w**d in your lawn? It found a weak spot.

Stressed turf from summer heat and drought leaves gaps, and clover, crabgrass, and nutsedge fill them fast.

Spraying helps. A thicker, healthier lawn wins.

We put together a breakdown of the most common w**ds we see in Charlotte lawns and what it takes to get them under control:
