Everyone plants milkweed for the monarch. But the monarch is just the famous tenant. The building is full.

Look closely at one milkweed stem in July and you'll find a whole cast, each with a different job:

The large milkweed bug — orange and black — crowds the seed pods, drinking the seeds dry.
The red milkweed beetle chews the leaves; its antennae run right through the middle of its own eyes.
The fuzzy, tufted milkweed tussock caterpillar shreds the older leaves in a group.
Fat yellow oleander aphids line the stems in rows.
And bees and wasps work the flowers for nectar all day long.

Nearly every one of them pulls the same trick the monarch does — eating the toxic plant and turning its poison into armor. That's why so many wear the same colors: orange, red, black. A uniform that says don't.

One plant. A dozen lives. The monarch's just the one with the publicist.
