I found this fruiting Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) vine today. This woody vine is native to the eastern US along woodland edges, yards, and fencerows. Each leaf is made up of five leaflets arranged like a hand (called a palmate leaf). Some people confuse Virginia Creeper with Poison Ivy. One way to tell them apart is to look at the leaflets. Poison Ivy has three leaflets, while Virginia Creeper has five. To keep these features straight, just remember “Leaves of 3, let it be. Leaves of 5, let it thrive.”

The fruits are fed on by a wide range of songbirds. In my area of Upstate South Carolina, 27 species of moth and butterfly caterpillars feed on the foliage, including the Pandorus Sphinx (Eumorpha pandorus), Virginia Creeper Clearwing (Vitacea scepsiformis), and Cecropia Moth (Hyalophora cecropia). Have you seen any Virginia Creeper fruits this year?
