Basilica of St. Adalbert located in Grand Rapids, Mi. We came upon this church by accident, but what a wonderful surprise. This Romanesque Revival beauty was built from 1907-1913 with limestone from Sandusky, OH and trimmed in Bedford limestone. The dome reflects Byzantine influences. The front facade large rose window and windows are from the Gothic period. The stain glass windows were made in Germany. And believe it not, there are no protective windows over them, so you can get up close and see the details. I do have one question: is the metal fake stone at the center dome over the transept original? Or was a change made? The final photo shows the gothic influenced rectory.

The church began by the founding of St. Adalbert Aid Society which assisted the new Polish immigrants coming to Grand Rapids.

Pope Paul II elevated St. Adalbert church to the status of a minor basilica in 1979.

Finding this gem was the highlight of my week. Next time, I need to get inside!

This barn is still located on our family’s property. (still owned by my sister). We were told it was built in the late 1800’s in Holland, Michigan. It was dismantled and rebuilt in 1913 on our property in Grand Haven. It definitely was modified by my father in the 1980’s. Some of the original architectural and structural details remain. This one needs a lot of love and care, but I absolutely love it!

Michigan is full of historic barns and I’m proud that they work hard to keep as many as possible.

I finally was able to see the design that was completed a year ago! This is a kitchen renovation of a kitchen I designed 13 years ago. Technically, every appliance and counter is in the same place, even though they have been upgraded. My client, Sally, loved the original design and wanted to freshen it up a bit. The family has grown up in this house. The kids are now graduating high school and college, but it still works for them! The small Dining Room off the Kitchen was modified into a breakfast room. It works for their lifestyle and they still love the house! I’m lucky to have repeat clients like them. It makes me smile when someone says they love living in their “newly” designed home. That’s the whole point, right?
