We're excited to share that two of our projects received Conceptual Approval from the Board of Architectural Review last week. Both are proposed hotels to be located adjacent to each other in the heart of the Charleston Market area, and both incorporate designs strongly driven by the context.

The Market Street Hotel incorporates new construction with several historic buildings, most notably a historic facade fronting North Market Street. While most of that facade's building has been altered and has little historic fabric remaining (and thus will be removed), the facade wall will be retained as a stand-alone, separate element that celebrates its early 21st-century market building form. A new two story restaurant/bar/lobby space with a full-height glass facade will be set behind the historic wall, separated by a laser-cut aluminum screen comprised of a pattern recalling the fig ivy plant common on many walls throughout the area. This layering of simple components provides a subtle but dynamic interior "wall" that will dramatically filter light to the interiors, while the re-worked remaining historic facade will maintain a restrained street presence along Charleston's ever-bustling Market district. The other historic buildings on site will be restored and used for guest rooms, a small "speak-easy" bar, and hotel amenities. A large four-story addition will be at the rear of the site.

We're excited to share that two of our projects received Conceptual Approval from the Board of Architectural Review last week. Both are proposed hotels to be located adjacent to each other in the heart of the Charleston Market area, and both incorporate designs strongly driven by the context.

The Anson Street Hotel takes its cues from the brick houses and wrought ironwork prevalent throughout the site's historic Ansonborough neighborhood. Set between two buildings in what is currently a parking lot, the building's front facade will provide a formal presence on Anson Street through simple forms and consistent fenestration, with an expansive storefront helping to activate the street. The storefront is wrapped with a semi-transparent aluminum surround designed with a pattern inspired by the neighborhood's wrought ironwork, allowing natural light to fill the hotel's lobby and bar spaces. Similarly, subtle brick detailing consistent to those of the historic precedents is used in a more contemporary way, providing richness to the facade.

Bello Garris Architects is proud to announce that in association with Liollio Architecture we have been awarded 2022 Merit Award for New Construction by AIA South Carolina for the Hellenic Center project.

This project replaces the Greek Orthodox of the Holy Trinity’s existing facilities, located in downtown Charleston, SC. The new 21,000 s.f. building houses the church’s administrative and educational uses as well as a new social hall. A large commercial kitchen serves the new social hall space, that accommodates over 340 people.

Taking cues from the adjacent church building--which is individually listed in the National Historic Register--the new building’s design strives to provide a simple balance between the old and the new. Brick detailing, stained wood, and large scale windows will provide a striking but subtle design that complements the historic structure while still providing an innovative architectural approach.

Working collaboratively with Liollio Architecture in the early stages of the project, Bello Garris Architects served as Architect of Record.

Bello Garris Architects is proud to announce we have been awarded New Construction Merit Award by AIA South Carolina for our Meeting Street project.

1426 Meeting Street provides much needed office space in the emerging market located in the “Neck” area of the peninsula. This two story, 6,000 SF office space is designed for flexibility and will accommodate both a single or multiple tenants.

After extensive study of the context of the area, the building skin was considered in a “layered approach”. This was to pay respect to the high degree of variety in the neighboring forms and materials. Surrounded by open space, and a prevalence of industrial facilities and shipping containers, the design seeks to take that industrial nature and soften those textures through the use of natural materials. The exterior skin consists primarily of smooth Shou Sugi Ban wood siding with textured accents that further emphasize the shifting layers of the skin. Reflections of the nearby stacked shipping containers are evident in the proportions and patterning of the exterior Shou Sugi Ban wood siding. The natural wood siding at the corner provides a point of contrast that emphasizes the main entrance and provides relief to the Shou Sugi Ban wood and metal palette.

We are excited to have recently received Conceptual approval from the Board of Architectural Review for our hotel design, in the Morrison Yard development in Charleston, S.C. Located along the Cooper River in the upper peninsula, the 150 room hotel will have a ground floor cafe fronting the street, large conference spaces, and a rooftop bar/restaurant with sweeping views of the Charleston harbor and historic districts.

Organized around a shared auto entry court that is fronted by a covered pedestrian colonnade, the nine-story building’s front facade is set back from the street, allowing for an outdoor terrace along Morrison Drive. The hotel’s design takes its cues from Charleston proportions, applied to a larger scale in a simple and restrained manner. Extensive glazing is used to take advantage of the views and wood elements are employed where the most public interaction will occur.

We look forward to further development of the project in the coming months. Thanks to all members of the team: DSM Partners, Origin Development Partners, and SeamonWhiteside .

Today we are highlighting a renovation project in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Transforming a 1970s funeral home building into a class A office space took some creativity. We utilized simple material palette with warm wood accents to bring clean modern feel to this "dated" building. Project is under construction now, can't wait to share this transformation. Thank you to the team! Owner: .md Contractor:

Happy to share the master plan images for the Audubon's Silver Bluff Center and Sanctuary. Audubon South Carolina asked Bello Garris to survey existing facilities and develop a master plan for the campus. The plan proposes a new gathering place and an outdoor educational pavilion that provides additional instructional space for the groups that visit the site. New pavilion would serve as an educational tool in sustainable construction and bird-friendly timber harvesting. Simple changes in trailheads, signage and fencing would unify the campus and provide a sense of identity to Silver Bluff. We are happy to be involved in advancing the conservation work that is being done at Silver Bluff Sanctuary.
