At NAC Industries, many of our projects involve underground utilities, excavation, HDD, vibratory plowing, and other work where knowing the location of existing utilities is critical.

Before breaking ground, crews need to understand what utilities are present, where they are located, and what procedures must be followed around those lines.

Always make the required 811 notification before digging, verify utility markings, and use appropriate locating and excavation methods.

Remember that not every privately installed utility may be included in the 811 system, so additional locating methods, private locators, as-built drawings, or site knowledge may be necessary.

If something doesn't look right, a utility isn't where expected, or an unmarked line is discovered, stop and communicate with the appropriate personnel before continuing work.

A few extra minutes spent locating and verifying utilities can prevent injuries, outages, equipment damage, and costly repairs.

Whether we're working on fencing, landscaping, underground utilities, excavation, or other outdoor projects, our crews often work around moving equipment.

One of the most important things every team member can do is remain aware of equipment operating nearby and never assume the operator knows where you are.

Make eye contact with the operator whenever possible before approaching equipment, stay clear of blind spots and travel paths, avoid walking behind or between moving equipment, and follow established communication and spotter procedures.

Operators should also stop equipment when visibility is limited rather than relying on assumptions about where workers are located.

Taking a few extra seconds to communicate and create separation between people and equipment can make a major difference in preventing injuries. Know your surroundings.
