The secret is out. Benji is the one who really runs this company. He's not perfect, as he is frequently found sleeping in his office, but he'd much rather be out in the sun, inspecting the large slabs of wood for our dining tables.

It is rare to have the opportunity to work with a client 750 miles away, and after design, build, and delivery, travel to NYC to photograph the table yourself as it sits in its new home. It was no easy task to design a table that integrated well with the nearby steel railing and other rectangular features, while showing off the beauty of a live edge top. But after 78 pieces of steel, nearly 400 individual welds, and a 350 lb piece of wood from Africa, the project was complete. It is a true honor to have one of our tables perched atop a Manhattan penthouse.

Outdoor bar with a view! Our trip to New York was a success. Not only did we get to take some beautiful photos of our most recent dining table in it's new home, but we got to see the outdoor bar that we shipped up over a year ago that enjoys this rooftop terrace view year round!

We had the pleasure of designing and building Herd Provisions a pair of new indoor and outdoor tables. As this Charleston staple of fine organic dining flourishes, they found the need for frequently seating larger parties. To accommodate, we built a pair of 6 foot round tables from reclaimed Indonesian hardwoods. Come by and have one of their farm-to-table steaks or any other organic dish and enjoy it at a Modulus Designs table.

Custom pantry of your dreams, coming right up. We have 1,500 lbs of American Elm, that is about to creat a beautiful built-in pantry for one of our clients. All of the solid Elm shelves have been meticulously hand finished to perfection, and will be mounted in a floating fashion, so that no hardware is visible.

Also, a peek at the nearly finished Sapele top for our Euler table, headed up to NYC!

Another peek behind the scenes. This time, Marty runs a 1.5 inch thick piece of solid Sapele through the jointer to give it a perfectly straight edge as we turn it into a beautiful countertop for a built-in kitchen pantry system, designed from the ground up. Stay tuned for the first look into the design that will transform this space for our clients.

Welcome to the Modulus Designs workshop! You'll find a collection of tools and equipment in our shop that more frequently overlaps with what NASA or your favorite race car team uses, rather than a typical furniture builder.

Precision and strength are critical to our designs due to the weight, Ballance, and unconventional shapes and angles we use.

Today's behind the scenes look is at one of our welding platforms. The hardened steel surface is machined to be perfectly flat and level. We use a system of guides, jigs, clamps, and positioners to precisely lay out every piece, and then lock it into place before welding. The heat that is put into each piece of steel during the welding process can cause it to bend and warp. Our specialized platform allows us to prevent that, when paired with the proper welding procedures.

Setting up for every weld can be a complex process, so prior to cutting the first piece of steel for your table, we pull measurements from our 3D model, and lay out the location and order of every single cut and weld (last photo).

Nature doesn't produce perfection, but that's where the beauty comes from. However, when the 300 year old African hardwood arrives at our studio, perfection is not optional. All of the live edge wood we use is kiln dried to the optimal moisture content to prevent future cracking and warping, but that alone isn't good enough for us. All of our large hardwood tables are precision routed allowing structural steel to be recessed into the underside of the live edge slabs. This extra rigidity ensures that your Modulus Designs table will remain straight and true for generations.
