I asked ChatGPT to “What would you say about me if you had to write an “about the owner” facebook post..
It’s long and I’m sorry but it’s all the truth!
MEET THE OWNER | BLAKE FURRY
For those who don’t know me, I’m Blake Furry.
I’m a husband, dad of three boys, owner of Furry Overhead Door Co., part owner of another company, and a guy who apparently looked at having three kids and multiple businesses and thought:
“You know what I need? More s**t to do.”
I have a hard time sitting still.
I’m competitive as hell, I overthink everything, and I’m constantly looking for ways to make something better.
This is great for growing a company.
It’s probably significantly less great for the people who work for me. 😂
My managers have learned there are a few phrases that should immediately concern them:
“I’ve been thinking…”
“Hear me out…”
and the most dangerous one…
“This should be pretty simple.”
It is almost never simple.
We can have the best month we’ve ever had, break records, get incredible reviews, and knock out some huge projects…
…and I’ll somehow find the one thing we screwed up and spend the drive home figuring out how we’re going to fix it.
That’s just how I’m wired.
I hate getting comfortable.
I hate hearing, “That’s how we’ve always done it.”
And I’m perfectly willing to try something, realize it was a terrible idea, and pretend I never enthusiastically explained to everyone two weeks earlier why it was going to change the company forever. 😂
I’ve made plenty of mistakes building this business.
I’ve hired the wrong people.
Trusted the wrong people.
Spent money I shouldn’t have.
Made decisions too quickly.
Made other decisions way too slowly.
I’ve been right plenty of times.
I’ve also had to experience the absolute devastation of realizing one of my employees was right and I was wrong.
I try not to let them enjoy those moments too much.
But somewhere along the way, something changed for me.
When I first started building this company, I wanted to be successful.
I wanted the trucks.
I wanted the growth.
I wanted to win.
And don’t get me wrong…
I still want to win.
Probably more than ever.
But what “winning” means to me isn’t the same anymore.
Because eventually you look around and realize you’re not just building a company.
You’re building something that other people are depending on.
Every truck that leaves our shop in the morning has somebody behind the wheel who’s building a life of their own.
There are mortgages being paid.
Kids being raised.
Vacations being saved for.
Careers being built.
Families depending on the decisions we make.
That’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly.
One of the coolest things I’ve gotten to experience is watching people grow inside this company.
Watching someone start out knowing very little and eventually become the person everyone else calls when they don’t know the answer.
Watching employees become leaders.
Watching people gain confidence.
Watching somebody make more money than they ever thought they would.
Watching people build a career instead of just having a job.
That stuff means more to me now than another truck on the road ever could.
And then there’s my family.
They’re the ones who have seen the side of building a business that Facebook doesn’t show.
The stress.
The late nights.
The phone calls.
The risks.
The times I was physically home but mentally still at work.
My wife has been beside me through all of it.
And my three boys are a huge part of why I keep pushing myself.
Someday they’re going to be old enough to understand what Dad was actually doing all those years.
And I don’t care whether any of them ever work for Furry Overhead Door.
I don’t care whether they become business owners.
I don’t even care what they decide to do for a living.
But I hope they learn something from watching me build this.
Bet on yourself.
Work your ass off for the things you want.
Treat people right.
Keep your word.
Admit when you’re wrong.
Take care of the people who take care of you.
And don’t spend your life wondering what would’ve happened if you’d just had the balls to try.
There’s something I tell our team all the time:
“I don’t have to be right. We just have to win.”
I used to think winning meant building the biggest company possible.
Now I think it’s something different.
If someday I can look back and know that my family had a life they’re proud of…
That our customers were treated right…
That the people who helped build this company were able to build better lives for their families because they were part of it…
And that my boys watched their dad chase something he believed in instead of wondering “what if?”…
I’d say we won.
Furry Overhead Door Co. might have my name on the trucks.
But it hasn’t been about me for a long time.
And if you happen to work here and are getting emotional reading this…
Enjoy the moment.
Because I’ve been thinking about a few changes we should probably make Monday morning.
Should be pretty simple. 😂
