A chimney that looked rough and worn a short time ago can look solid and clean again with the right chimney repair. Damaged brick and crumbling mortar do not always mean a full chimney rebuild is needed. Many chimneys can be restored by replacing the failing bricks and repointing the mortar joints.

The tricky part is making the repair blend in. Older brick weathers over the years, so matching new brick and mortar to the existing chimney takes experience. When it is done right, the finished work looks like it was always there, and the chimney sheds water the way it should.

Fall is a good time to take care of this in Northeast Ohio. Once winter hits, water sitting in cracked mortar freezes and expands, and small damage spreads fast. If your chimney has loose bricks, white staining, or mortar that flakes away when you touch it, those are signs worth having checked from the ground.

Homeowners in Pepper Pike and across the east side have older brick homes where this kind of masonry repair comes up often. Ray Arnold Masonry has been family owned since 1952, with over 70 years of chimney repair and tuckpointing experience. We assess the damage first, explain what we find in plain language, and agree on the repair with you before any work starts.

Not every damaged brick wall needs to be torn down and rebuilt. Often, careful brick repair—removing failing sections and replacing them with new material is the better solution.

Matching new brick or block to older masonry takes patience because older bricks weather over time. A skilled crew gets as close a match as possible, and tuckpointing (replacing worn mortar) helps repairs blend in over time. The key is restoring a solid wall that sheds water properly.

This kind of repair is common on older homes and buildings around Shaker Heights after decades of freeze-thaw cycles. Ignoring cracks lets moisture spread, so it’s smart to address damage before winter. Commercial block repair works the same way: fix failing areas correctly instead of covering them up.

Ray Arnold Masonry has been family-owned since 1952, with over 70 years of brick, block, and stone experience. We assess the issue, explain it clearly, and agree on a repair plan before work begins.

Whether your walkway is brick, sandstone or multi colored bluestone we can make it right!

Check out this mosaic like walkway that we put back together for customers over in Geauga County!

If you’re wanting a walkway to be durable enough for Northeast Ohio Weather we can help.

Step 1:
Place a 4-6” of gravel that is compacted and then pour a 4” concrete walkway that is reinforced with rebar.

Step 2:
Place a mortar bed down and begin laying out the stone (or brick in some cases) that is secured well.

Step 3:
Go through all of the open mortar joints and tuckpoint so that the surface is flush and no indents exist for the snow and ice to build up in.

Step 4: (Critical for Northeast Ohio)
Spray the walkway with two coats of water based sealer that will keep moisture out and prevent unnecessary water intrusion to separate the top stone and the bottom layer of concrete.

Stone steps and retaining walls do a lot of quiet work around a home. They hold back soil, guide you safely to the door, and frame the entrance. When mortar starts crumbling or stones begin to shift, it is worth paying attention before winter arrives.

Freeze and thaw cycles in Northeast Ohio are hard on this kind of masonry. Water slips into worn joints, freezes, and slowly pushes stones and bricks apart. What looks like a small crack in the fall can spread once the cold sets in. In many cases, tuckpointing, which means replacing the worn mortar between stones or bricks, can tighten things back up before larger repairs are needed.

A well-built stone entrance should feel solid underfoot and look like it belongs with the home. That is the kind of masonry repair our crew focuses on, from resetting loose stones to matching mortar so the repair blends in naturally.

Ray Arnold Masonry has been family owned since 1952, and we have spent over 70 years working on steps, walls, and entrances across the east side. We look at the problem first, explain what we find in plain language, and agree on a plan with you before any work starts.

If the inside of your chimney is worn, cracked, or missing liner material, it may not be venting the way it should. Cold weather is on the way in Northeast Ohio, and fall is a smart time to take care of it before you start using your fireplace again.

Ray Arnold Masonry is now re-coating the inside of chimneys with Heatshield. Instead of a full chimney rebuild, this method applies a strong ceramic coating inside the flue. It seals gaps, smooths rough spots, and helps restore the liner from the inside. It can be a good option when the damage is caught early enough.

Here is how it works:
- First, we assess the chimney and check the liner
- Next, we clean and prep the inside surface
- Then, the Heatshield coating is applied to seal and protect

This kind of chimney repair can help homeowners in Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights get more life out of an older chimney without a major rebuild. Not every chimney is a fit, so the right first step is a proper look.

If your chimney has cracks, rough spots, or signs of wear inside, contact Ray Arnold Masonry to schedule an assessment and learn whether re-coating with Heatshield is the right repair for your home.

A block wall with cracked or crumbling sections is easy to ignore, but the damage rarely stays in one spot. Once water gets into the joints, freezing weather pushes the problem further each winter.

Concrete block wall repair starts with finding out why the wall is failing. Sometimes it is worn mortar that needs tuckpointing, which means replacing the old mortar between the blocks. Other times, damaged blocks need to be removed and reset so the wall ties back together the right way. A good masonry repair should match the existing wall and leave it looking clean and cared for, not patched.

This matters for homeowners with garage or foundation walls, and for business owners who need commercial block repair on their buildings. A solid, well-kept wall makes the whole property look better and helps keep moisture out.

If you have a block wall in Cleveland Heights or the surrounding east side that is cracking, shifting, or losing mortar, fall is a smart time to have it looked at before the cold sets in. Ray Arnold Masonry has been family owned since 1952, and we will assess the damage, explain what we find in plain language, and agree on the right repair with you first.

Some chimneys look solid and sharp. Others show peeling, crumbling, and exposed brick. The difference usually comes down to catching damage early instead of waiting.

When bricks and mortar start to break down, water gets inside. Once freezing weather hits Northeast Ohio, that trapped moisture expands and pushes the damage further. What could have been simple chimney repair or tuckpointing can turn into a full chimney rebuild if it sits through a few more winters.

A few things you can spot from the ground:
• Mortar lines that look sandy or washed out
• Loose, flaking, or missing bricks
• White staining or dark streaks on the chimney
• Pieces of brick or mortar on the ground below

Many homes in Pepper Pike and the surrounding east side have older brick chimneys, and this kind of wear is normal over time. The key is having the damage looked at before it spreads. In many cases, brick repair and fresh tuckpointing can restore the chimney so it sheds water and looks well kept again.

Front steps are one of the first things people see, and they should feel solid every time you walk up to the door. A customer recently shared this about our crew: “Arnold rebuilt our front steps and did an excellent job.”

Reviews like this matter because step work is real masonry repair. The base has to be stable, the joints have to be tight, and the finished look should fit the home. If you have cracking brick or loose mortar, brick repair or tuckpointing (replacing worn mortar between bricks) can help before the damage spreads through a whole section.

We help homeowners and property managers in Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, and Pepper Pike with brick repair and other repairs that need a careful eye. Our team has over 70 years of experience, and we take time to explain what we see before we recommend a plan.

If your steps, walkway, or other brickwork is starting to crumble or shift, contact Ray Arnold Masonry to schedule an assessment.

Tuckpoint or rebuild? The age old question in masonry.

Have you ever looked at your chimney and thought to yourself, “that just needs tuckpointed.”

Or “I keep seeing mortar in my gutters or garden, my chimney might need to be rebuilt. 😬”

Whether you know it or not, it often can’t be accurately assessed from the ground staring up 30-50 feet and this is why we assess chimney damage in person or with a drone and NEVER pretend to know what a chimney needs until we’ve looked it over.

HOW TO KNOW:

Tuckpointing?
•If a chimney has missing mortar and the bricks have not shifted out of place OR the inner mortar is still in tact behind the broken section
•If there are fine cracks throughout the mortar but no chipped brick or splits running vertically through multiple layers
•If the crown and top few courses of brick are solid and no cracks or broken pieces of crown have been shifted

These are all good signs that tuckpointing may be best option!

Rebuild?
•When mortar is missing completely from mortar joints and you can see all of the way into the chimney OR seeing daylight from the other side!
•When the brick is shifted out of place and has a bulge or noticeable areas that have shifted within the chimney area
•If the crown is broken and moved into multiple pieces and the top of the chimney looks abnormally larger than a couple feet down as if it has grown in width but not evenly
•If the chimney is leaning and no longer standing straight up

These are signs that a rebuild is likely going to need to happen.

If you don’t know what your chimney needs or have a quote for a repair but don’t know if it’s the right solution, give us a call at 440-834-8252.

RAM guy will give you an unbiased opinion and educate you on the risks and benefits of tuckpointing verse rebuilding.
