For years, my husband and I have coddled our k**b-and-tube wiring. We've installed GFCI switches galore. We have sleeved nearly every accessible wire with heat-shrink tubing, after finding that the insulation inside receptacles and ceiling boxes disintegrates when touched. Yikes!
So, when Marc Bailey concluded his site visit, we were not surprised to hear that our two-family, century home in Shaker Heights is a challenge--with three floors, two separate wiring systems, and no open rafters. Thankfully, Marc's skilled staff and flexible choice of rewiring plans enabled us to go ahead.
We chose to have just the first of three phases done, for now. Installation of our new wiring "backbone"-- with mostly just one modern outlet per room--improves safety, will support more connections later on, and may help if our insurer should threaten to drop us.
Our four crew members started the job in the eaves, entering through access panels in attic knee walls. They fished wires under the attic floor. They dropped the ends on one side down stud bays to the lower floors, and on the other side along a plumbing stack, to the basement breaker panels. None of that work even shows.
In our basement ceiling plaster, they sawed a tidy channel just 8" wide, stretching nearly the length of the house, and ran additional wires from the breakers to basement receptacles and upstairs interior walls.
We greatly appreciate how hard Marty and Logan strategized to minimize saw holes in interior walls, by clever routing of wires. They made countless trips up and down the stairs, day after day, to get the job done.
The crew draped furnishings with plastic sheets and cleaned up as they went. Everyone was unfailingly respectful and accommodating--including with our easily spooked pet rabbit.
Some years ago, an electrician told us that rewiring would require sawing out the bottom four feet of every hand-troweled plaster wall. High praise to Connected Electrical--starting with Adam in Scheduling--for providing a solution incomparably better than destroying half the house!"
