Unrooted Homestead

Unrooted Homestead We haven't put down roots yet, but that won't stop us from working on creating a meaningful and sustainable life.

Early last summer as we started getting blooms months out from the wedding, I decided drying some would take the stress off of wedding time if some flower varieties failed or the blooming times didn’t work out. I knew I was a novice, I considered it an insurance plan. Fast forward a few weeks and our basement was taken over by hanging flowers for the next three months. It was amazing! Flowers covered every surface - our wood stove, our tv, every wall, etc. I will definitely be growing some varieties to dry in the future for our own projects, crafts, and little dried bouquets.

What a beautiful time to be in the garden. The garden to do list is a mile long. But the garden’s greatest gift is that no matter how behind I get, no matter how I neglect it, it continues to bring me calm - not stress.

Wild blueberries are ripe! That means every free evening, we grab our berry buckets (recycled containers that we add a string to so they hang around our necks), change into long pants and long sleeves to defend against the mosquitos and black flies, and head up to our favorite spot to pick until dark. Then we come home and listen to an audiobook while we sort through the berries and freeze them in single layers on cookie sheets. Once frozen, they are stored in freezer bags for use in oatmeal, smoothies and baked goods.

Finally feels like spring, and every time the sun shines I promptly hit save, stand up from my desk, walk outside and just marvel at things appearing and greening and growing and blooming. And then it rains or becomes 30 degrees almost immediately and I return to working on my dissertation.

We are so very honored to be included in the April issue on homesteading. Truly, I still feel like a novice at all things homesteading, learning and trying and tweaking little by little. I have learned so much from the homesteading communities both in the State College area and beyond. What a privilege to have an opportunity like this to share what we have learned with others so that homesteading can be accessible to all: whether they own a farm or rent an apartment, have unlimited income or a very tight budget, with lots of time or a few spare moments.

Reflecting back on this very same patch of Crocus, my first post on this account almost exactly one year ago. We’ve both grown a lot, and are excited to greet spring once again.

Towards the end of the growing season, I started harvesting and drying for tea. We have been using up our bagged tea stash, and just made our first cups this week with our own herbs. I 100% thought it was going to taste bad, or at least worse than store-bought tea. I was wrong! After tweaking the ratios a bit, it is delicious! Anyone else make their own tea? What are your favorite combinations, tips or tricks?

We were incredibly grateful to spend two weeks of January on Kauai, Hawaii visiting my brother and his wife with family. The lush greenery, sunshine and warm air were paradise. And everywhere we went, we saw the most beautiful variegated foliage. By the end of the trip, my exclamations about variegation had become a great joke to Ryan and the rest of the family. But I mean, come on! Look at it! 💁‍♀️

We were able to share and gift a lot of our homemade canned goods over the holiday, and it felt wonderful. When we share them with friends, family and neighbors, I think about starting plants from seed, thinning the fruit trees, picking raspberries, putting cherries, weeding and watering, and every other small act in the process that leads to the finished product. Its a whole lot of shelf-stable love in the end.
