Automating a chain link or farm gate often involves a slight modification.

For sliding gates this may be the addition of a tail section for the chain bracket, such as this one six feet in length. (Photo prior to grinding and painting.)

Tubing may also need additional support unless originally built for automation. We weld on sections of angle iron to the tubing and then weld on brackets to the angle ion.

I've added this text to the help section of our gate designer program:
Opening width can mean different things to different people. A client usually thinks of the driveway clear passage they want when the gate is fully open. A designer may be thinking about the space between posts or columns. An installer may be deciding whether post holes go beside the driveway, partly notched into the driveway edge, or set back from the driveway edge.

On swing gates, hinges are commonly placed between the post and gate with a reveal such as 3". When the gate opens, the gate thickness and hinge hardware can still project into the usable passage. For example, a 120" driveway may need posts set back or outside the driveway edge so the open gate still leaves the desired 120" of clear passage.

Best practice: agree on the desired clear driveway passage, post or column placement, hinge/reveal assumptions, and ground conditions before digging. For production work, wait until the posts or columns are set and the actual post-to-post distance is measured before ordering or fabricating the final gate leaf width.

Our clients have free access to the gate designer program, as may those requesting a bid.

Visitors are able to also use the program with the exception of not being able to print results or save a collection of gates.

But for the professional designers, architects, fence and gate companies or fabricators we offer an inexpensive subscription to use all these features.

It may save them hours of drawing, and offer them a way to sit with clients in the field and design the gate of their dreams instantly on the spot.

A we drove to Westport today, Jen tried out the gate designer program on her cell phone, and saved it.

Back at the shop tonight I passed it to AI to place it in an imaginary Westport home setting.

With each added feature to the gate designer program, another two pop into mind.

The latest version #322 is almost 12,000 lines of code long. Through repeated uploads, over three million lines of code have been passed to the server and overwritten in the process.
