If you love science like we do, then you may be curious about what is in your soil? What specific elements are we testing for?
Each fertilizer bag has three numbers on the front that indicate what the nutrient break down is of each product. The first number is the % of Nitrogen. The goal of nitrogen fertilization is to apply the right amount at the right time to promote consistent growth. Maintaining a darker, longer-lasting color and allowing the turfgrass to recuperate from damage are key to a healthy lawn.
The second number is Phosphorous and is a major component for energy transfer in plants. It is also required for good seedling growth and development, which makes it vitally important during establishment of new seed. Phosphorus also promotes good root development.
Finally, the third number is potassium, which is another major component for plant growth. It enhances root growth, disease resistance, improves heat and drought tolerance, and increases cold tolerance.
In many cases these are not the only nutrients in the bag and many other micro-nutrients could be included, however, these are the foundation for a good turf management program. The amount, the type of each nutrient, and the timing is driven by soil analysis. Knowing your soil breakdown can save you big money in the long run and is much better for the environment by preventing over application.
