I pulled all of this out of a curb edge by hand near Centerville Park. Weeds, dirt, and rot packed in there, holding water right against the concrete. That is exactly how a curb starts crumbling, and a full replacement costs a whole lot more than a cleanout and seal. If your curbs are looking like the before photo, give me a call before winter. This is an expansion joint here in Centerville, and it does a lot more work than people realize. It absorbs all the movement when concrete heats and cools through the seasons. I cleaned this one out completely and sealed it deep because when an expansion joint fails, the slabs around it start cracking too. If yours are looking rough, fall is a great time to get them sealed before the freeze. Britten Martin, Crack Fills. 801-971-5972.

This crack in North Salt Lake was about 10 feet of pure horror movie. Water was getting straight through to the base, and one winter of freeze and thaw would have turned a straightforward seal into a full slab replacement. That is the difference between a repair bill and a replacement bill. I got it sealed up before the cold hits. Britten Martin with Crack Fills, just your friendly neighborhood concrete guy. 801-971-5972.

POV: sealing cracks at Centerville Community Park while the summer program crew keeps a hundred kids flowing around your cones 😄

These young guns were in and out all day and the park never skipped a beat. Cracks outside the concessions stand: sealed. Park: ready for fall.

Got a crack that's been bugging you? Winter makes it worse — send me a photo and I'll tell you straight if it needs sealing. 801-971-5972

Winter is coming. Is your concrete ready?

These two before and after photos show a control joint and a threshold expansion joint cleaned and sealed.

Open joints give rain and melting snow a place to collect. When that water freezes, it expands and can contribute to concrete damage. Sealing those gaps helps limit water entry before freezing weather arrives.

Take a quick look at your driveway, walkways, and entryways. If the joint sealant is missing, cracked, or pulling away from the sides, now is a good time to have it checked.

Send Crack Fills a picture of your joints. Let’s get them ready for winter.

A raised edge between concrete slabs may look small, but it can catch a shoe, bump a cart, or make a walkway harder to use.

This short clip shows how I use surface grinding to bring a raised concrete lip down for a smoother transition.

The key is choosing the right repair. When the concrete is otherwise in good shape, grinding may address the uneven edge without replacing the whole slab. If the slab is still moving or badly broken, it needs a closer look.

For property managers and maintenance teams, checking the height difference between slabs is just as important as looking for cracks.

Have an uneven sidewalk or walkway? Send Crack Fills a photo, and let’s talk about what makes sense.

A concrete joint can look filled and still let water through. That foam tucked inside? It has a job, but sealing out water isn’t it!

It’s called **backer rod**, a flexible foam rope that sits underneath the sealant between concrete slabs.

Here’s what it does:

• Supports the sealant during installation.
• Helps control the sealant’s depth.
• Keeps sealant from sticking to the bottom of the joint, helping it stretch as the concrete moves.

Backer rod alone is not a watertight seal.

When dirt is packed around it, it might slow water temporarily. But once that dirt washes away, water can find its way around the rod and into the gap below.

The backer rod supports the sealant. The sealant bonds to the sides of the joint and helps keep water out. They work as a team!

That’s why proper cleanup matters. Pulling out old material and debris prepares the joint for the next repair.

Have a gap in your concrete and aren’t sure what it needs? Send Crack Fills a photo. We’re happy to help you understand what you’re looking at.

A good concrete repair takes more than just filling the crack.

This joint was ground, cleaned, fitted with backer rod, and then filled with flexible sealant.

Each step helps create a cleaner finish and a repair that can better handle movement and moisture.

Good prep makes a big difference.
